The Transport Ministry now wants Prasarana to increase the capacity of the Kelana Jaya line MKBF to at least 1,000,000 passengers by the third quarter of 2026.
Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, the operator of the Klang Valley's commuter rail and bus network, is now sharing its performance indicators with the public in an effort to demonstrate its openness to change and excellence. Previously, Prasarana would only provide weekly updates to the Transport Ministry on key aspects of its rail and bus services. Commuters can now follow Prasarana's progress towards achieving a global indicator for rail service reliability known as Mean Kilometres Between Failures (MKBF), an established international benchmark for determining how well a rail network is run. Any incident that causes a five-minute or longer disruption will be recorded.

Due to the numerous disruptions over the past year, the MKBF of the country's most heavily used LRT line, the Kelana Jaya LRT, is a mere 150,000. The Transport Ministry now wants Prasarana to increase the capacity of the Kelana Jaya line MKBF to at least 1,000,000 passengers by the third quarter of 2026. According to Prasarana, an MKBF of 1,000,000 equates to five to six incidents per year.

"This initiative will immediately improve Prasarana's operational transparency." It will also improve its rail and bus services by identifying areas for improvement and implementing measures to address them in order to meet the company's MKBF target of 1,000,000 by Q3 2026. "The benefit will be passed on to the public in the form of constantly improving service reliability and consistency," said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Loke agreed last month for Prasarana to make its MKBF report public every month. Prasarana's MKBF target of 1,000,000 currently applies to the Kelana Jaya LRT, Ampang LRT, and Kajang MRT. Because it is only a few kilometres long, the KL Monorail will be given a target of 150,000 passengers. Prasarana recorded an MKBF of between 151,000 and 178,000 for the three lines mentioned above in 2022, while the KL Monorail only achieved 84,000. This means that the Kelana Jaya LRT must be six times more reliable than it is now.

According to Prasarana president and group CEO Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, no MKBF target has been set for the Putrajaya MRT because the line is still new and data on its initial performance is still being gathered. Loke claims that the 1,000,000 MKBF target is comparable to that of every other reputable rail operator in the world, including Singapore's SMRT. The most recent MKBF data will be released on the 20th of each month, while updates on ridership, load factor, service reliability, service availability, and station facilities of its rail and bus services will be shared every 5pm Wednesday at myrapid.com.my/rapid-rail-performance.
