- DHL Express Malaysia Expands EV Fleet With 7 E-Bikes, 44 Vans
To further demonstrate its dedication to eco-friendly transportation, DHL Express has expanded its delivery fleet in Malaysia by incorporating 44 electric vans and seven electric scooters.
For the record, DHL was the first in the country to deploy EVs for logistics use in October 2022.
The company says that its recently purchased Blueshark R1 smart electric scooters improve document delivery and pickup, facilitate small shipments, and offer ad hoc despatch support for official correspondence. The R1 will be used by couriers in Ipoh, Penang, Melaka, and the Klang Valley.
The electric scooter has a 2.88kWH dual-battery that allows it to travel 110 kilometres on a single charge from any 220 to 240V power source in only 3.5 hours. It produces an estimated 90% less CO2e per year than conventional 150cc engines.
“In facilitating global trade and supply chains, we believe it should not come at the expense of the environment,” said Julian Neo, Managing Director of DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei. “As industries continue to transform in the direction of sustainability, we remain focused on leveraging green technologies towards climate-neutral operations. Expanding our EV network marks another significant step in our journey to be net-zero carbon by 2050.”
With today's announcement, the number of e-vans in use has increased from 10 to 54, expanding the service area beyond Selangor, KL, Penang, and Johor to include other states in the country. According to DHL, the ongoing introduction of the CAM EA4 and Foton iBlue to supplement the current fleet of CAM EC35 vans is anticipated to result in a 74% decrease in overall fuel expenses and a 63.5% boost in carbon efficiency when compared to the ICE vans that are being replaced.
By the end of 2024, plans call for 23% of Malaysia's last-mile delivery vehicles to be electric. By doing this, DHL Express Malaysia would be well-positioned to meet the group-wide goal of having a 60% electric fleet by 2030.
“Innovations in EV development have produced growing evidence that sustainability and performance can go hand-in-hand. We are confident in our role as a driving force to accelerate adoption and facilitate positive changes in the logistics sector. With our decarbonisation strategy, we can ensure we responsibly cover every mile,” said Thushan Gooneratne, Vice President of Operations, DHL Express Malaysia.
