- Lego Debuts New McLaren MP4/4 Ayrton Senna Kit
The very latest racecar set from Lego is a replica of the legendary 1988 Honda-powered McLaren MP4/4 Formula 1 driven by the late Ayrton Senna.
Danish brick toy makers Lego has expanded its collection of racecar kits for 2024 with a sleuth of new additions. One of which perhaps celebrates the most legendary car and driver pairing in Formula 1 history – the late great Ayrton Senna and his Honda-powered McLaren MP4/4.
The new kit forms part of the Lego’s extended Icons series and, for most fans, this was arguably long overdue. Perhaps the fact that the real car’s actual 1988 livery heavily featured the iconic theme of cigarette brand Marlboro had something to do with that.
Nevertheless, in recent years, the very same car has been making appearances without said tobacco brand’s markings, and said rendition is what this latest Lego kit mirrors. Apart from that omission, there’s indeed much to look forward to in this kit.
The set contain 693 Lego pieces, measuring 318 MM long, 165 MM wide, and 127 MM tall once fully assembled. It also features functional suspension and steering, an adjustable rear wing, and a detailed engine replica.
The set contains 693 pieces in total, measuring 318 MM long, 165 MM wide, and 127 MM tall once fully assembled. Like many of the cars featured in the Icons series, this McLaren MP4/4 kit also features working steering and suspension, as well as an adjustable rear wing.
Moreover, builders can opt to display the set on an angled mount, which grants a better look at its finer details like the engine.
Perhaps the most awesome touch here is the kit’s inclusion of an Ayrton Senna minifigure, which gets its own podium, trophy, replica helmet, and a plaque containing one of Senna’s many famed quotes: “No matter what your dream is, you have to dedicate yourself entirely to it.”
This Is arguably a classy way to pay tribute to Senna and his all-dominating McLaren MP4/4. In 1988, said machine was powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged Honda RA168E V6 that screamed well beyond 12,000 RPM and developed 650 HP and propelled a chassis that weighed just 540 KG.
This was the same car that won all but one race in 1988 at the hands of both Senna and his infamous rival and then teammate Alain Prost. The former Brazilian got the better of the latter Frenchman by scoring eight wins in total to claim the first of three world titles.
This latest set also contains an Ayrton Senna minifigure complete with its own replica helmet, podium, trophy, and a plaque containing one of Senna's many famed and inspiring quotes.
All that arguably paled in comparison to the masterclass qualifying run Senna put the MP4/4 through during the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix – the very same run that Senna famously likened to a religious experience, where he even claimed to have entered a different dimension.
Well, you can now get a slice of that history proudly displayed in your cabinet case or desktop through this new Lego kit, which is now open for pre-orders online priced at US$79.99 (approx. RM377.35).
