Volvo is set to become the first carmaker to issue EV battery passport starting with its upcoming EX90 EV SUV.

Volvo Cars is reportedly set to introduce the world’s first electric vehicle (EV) battery passport. This marks a significant step towards increased transparency and sustainability in the auto industry and EVs.

This innovative passport, developed in partnership with UK startup Circulor, will debut in the upcoming EX90 SUV that just entered production recently.

It will meticulously document the origins of raw materials, the composition of battery components, the recycled content used, and the overall carbon footprint associated with battery production.

This initiative precedes the European Union’s mandate, set to take effect in 2027, which requires detailed documentation for all EVs.  Volvo’s proactive approach aligns with its ambitious goal of manufacturing only EVs by 2030

Volvo's EV battery passport will contain details such as raw materials origins, battery components composition, recycled content used, and overall carbon footprint associated with its production.

Vanessa Butani, Volvo's head of global sustainability, emphasised the importance of this development, underscoring the company’s commitment to transparency and leadership in sustainable practices.

The passport leverages blockchain technology to trace battery materials from their origin to the finished product, providing crucial information to consumers and regulators alike.

Douglas Johnson-Poensgen, CEO of Circulor, also highlights the challenges faced in tracing the origins of materials used in car manufacturing.

He noted that developing this system has been a complex process, spanning over five years. This traceability not only ensures compliance with forthcoming regulations but also helps automakers qualify for EV subsidies under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act.

This EV battery passport scheme aligns with a mandate from the EU that's poised to take affect from 2027 onwards.

Volvo's EV battery passport represents a groundbreaking advancement in the EV industry, setting a new standard for transparency and sustainability.

It offers a comprehensive solution to the growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles, enhancing consumer trust and regulatory compliance. KR
