- Proton Hits 100,000 Sales Mark for Six Consecutive Years
Proton exceeded the 100,000 sales mark for the sixth year in a row with 101,489 units sold so far this year.
National automaker Proton is continuing its positive stride as it has recently hit the 100,000 sales mark for six consecutive years. This feat was achieved after the automaker sold 12,690 units in Aug 2024, thus bringing its total annual sales volume to 101,489 units.
With this recent achievement, Proton has further solidified its position as the second largest automaker in the market in terms of sales volume, with a forecasted market share of 19%.
2024 Proton X50 RC
Part and parcel of Proton’s stellar achievement this year comes from its B-segment SUV model, the Proton X50. Thanks to the recent Running Change (RC) update given to the model earlier in June, the updated 2024 Proton X50 RC has received positive feedback and receptions among local automotive fans, with a total of 2,440 units delivered in Aug 2024 alone.
Its stellar sales volume last month also marks the third consecutive time the X50 has breached the 2,000 monthly sales mark, while its YTD sales volume now stands at 15,229 units, making it the most popular SUV model in Proton’s current lineup.
The Proton Saga retains its position as the national automaker's best-selling model.
The title for best-selling Proton model, however, still belongs to the beloved Proton Saga, as the automaker delivered a total of 6,211 units in Aug 2024, leading to YTD sales of 48,904 units—a 6.7% increase over last year’s YTD figures. Proton’s other sedan models have also recorded decent sales numbers last month, with the S70 charting a total sales figure of 1,205 units, while the Persona saw 1,452 units delivered.
Proton X90 Flagship SUV
Not to forget, Proton’s flagship SUV model—the Proton X90—has also recorded positive sales numbers last month, with 241 units being delivered, resulting in a YTD figure of 2,507 units. This helps the X90 to retain its position as the best-selling D-segment SUV in the market so far this year.
Besides the decent sales figure for all its models, Proton has also attributed its positive sales growth to the nation’s stable economic growth, while remaining optimistic about the potential for further growth of the local automotive industry.
Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah
“In light of the resilient domestic economy, with GDP growth projected at 4% to 5%, Proton agrees with the Malaysian Automotive Association’s (MAA) decision to increase the full-year TIV projection to 765,000 units, and we remain optimistic about the potential for further growth in the local automotive industry. Malaysia’s automotive market remains buoyant, and this is reflected by our sales volume exceeding 100,000 units for a sixth consecutive year with four months remaining in 2024,” said Roslan Abdullah, Proton Edar CEO.
“While there has been a lot of competition this year from new brands, market response to Proton’s latest updated models has been positive, with strong booking numbers seen nationwide. This is a testament to the effectiveness of the enhancements made and speaks volumes about the importance of having a market-leading network of 3S/4S outlets to serve our customers’ needs,” the CEO added.
As for the export markets, Proton has recently recorded positive sales growth in some selected markets as the automaker strives to expand and reestablish its brand internationally. In August, Brunei saw its highest ever monthly sales performance with 120 units sold to customers there.
Just like our local market, the Proton Saga is also the automaker’s best-selling model for the export markets, with a total of 140 units exported in Aug 2024. Other models also saw an uptick in August export shipments, bringing the cumulative export sales from Proton to its distributors to 2,110 units since January this year.
“As one of our first export markets, Proton has a long history with Bruneian car buyers stretching back to the original Proton Saga. Thanks to the painstaking efforts of Pad Motors Proton Brunei and our latest range of intelligent models, the brand has undergone a rejuvenation in the country, leading to achieving a record sales month in August,” added Roslan Abdullah.
