Proton Saga Charts New Decade Sales Record, Upgrades In The Pipeline

The Proton Saga has charted a new sales record in a decade, while plans for an upgrade are now in the pipeline.
It’s been almost four decades since the legendary Proton Saga made its debut as the first national car model. After many iterations and upgrades, this beloved sedan model is still breaking records, as it recently charted a new sales record for this decade.
In July this year, a total of 7,855 units of the Saga were delivered by Proton, marking the best single-month sales performance for the model since Oct 2013. Cumulatively, the year-to-date (YTD) sales figure for the Saga reads at 42,693 as of July 2024—a healthy 8.8% increase over last year’s YTD numbers.

Ever since its production roll-off in 1985, Proton has churned out more than two million examples of this iconic model, thus solidifying the Saga as the most popular model by a national automaker. Given its stellar sales performance last month, the Saga has also retained its position as the mainstay of Proton’s product lineup, despite the arrival of more Geely-based models in recent years.
To further prolong the Saga’s lifespan and meet market demands, Proton is currently working with its Chinese partner Geely to introduce more upgrades and improvements for the model. This collaborative effort is further accelerated by the establishment of the Proton R&D centre in China earlier this year.
Although there are no details regarding the improvements to be made to the Saga, Proton stated that it will leverage Geely's global footprint and expertise to further upgrade this beloved model in the near future.

In conjunction with the festive Merdeka month, Proton has launched the “Saga-Merdeka Easy To Win” campaign, providing Malaysians with promotions and incentives for the Saga model. Throughout the month, buyers can get cash rebates worth RM500 for the purchase of any Proton Saga model.

On top of that, Maybank customers who book the Saga on the weekends of Aug 10 and 17 are eligible for an additional RM200 rebate when the promotional message from Maybank is presented by the customer in any participating Proton dealers.

Proton Deputy CEO and Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah
“The Proton Saga has come a long way in serving the nation by enhancing mobility. At Proton, we are steadfast in our commitment to driving Saga sales forward, especially with our latest promotion timed to coincide with Merdeka month. This initiative not only reflects our commitment to bring Saga to newer heights but also celebrates our national pride, reinforcing the Saga as a symbol of Malaysian innovation and resilience,” said Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah.
