- KG Mobility Set To Adopt Chery’s T2X Platform
South Korea's oldest carmaker, KG Mobility (formerly SsangYong Motor), has announced a strategic agreement with China's Chery Automobile. Together, both parties co-develop a new line of vehicles, including plug-in hybrid models.
Previously, we reported that KG Mobility and BYD had agreed late last year to also work together on developing battery-powered and plug-in hybrid vehicles, including a new pickup truck.
The agreement with Chery will allow the sharing of intellectual property related to Chery's T2X platform - which accommodates both plug-in hybrid and traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) configurations. This collaboration also involves joint vehicle development, design, manufacturing, and marketing.
The T2X platform, set for use in future Tiggo variants, features advanced technologies such as adaptive magnetic suspension, stepless variable suspension resistors for real-time damping adjustments, and a hydraulic chassis damping system that reduces vibrations by 30% compared to traditional setups.
KG Mobility Chairman Kwak Jea-sun emphasised the company’s aim to increase production and enhance its global market strategy by launching a range of higher-quality vehicles, including new models like the Torres EVX and Actyon. He noted that the partnership with Chery will enable KG Mobility to shorten development timelines and better meet customer demand with a diverse lineup of new vehicles.
In addition, Kwak revealed that KG Mobility intends to create a Korean-style SUV that will provide distinctive mobility solutions in keeping with its new strategic objective of "practical creativity."
Between January and September 2023, Chery Automobile sold 1.75 million automobiles, a 40% increase from the previous year. The company is still expanding its market share. Last year, the business shipped 937,000 vehicles overseas, making it the biggest exporter of automobiles from China.
