Hyundai Motor is gearing up to launch its first manufacturing facility in Malaysia next year. This major initiative, representing an investment of RM2.16 billion, stands as Hyundai’s most significant financial commitment in Malaysia to date and is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities for Malaysians.

Speaking about the development, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Abdul Aziz highlighted the scale of the investment as a landmark move for the Korean automaker in Malaysia, with several models already in the pipeline.

“This is a landmark move. Seven car models will be manufactured over the next five years, with the plant set to begin operations in Kulim, Kedah, by next year,” he stated.

The announcement came during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to South Korea, where he held a closed-door meeting with Hyundai Motor to explore avenues for deeper collaboration.

This initiative aligns seamlessly with Malaysia’s focus on attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) in high-growth sectors like green technology, semiconductors, and smart mobility. Hyundai’s commitment to establishing a local production facility underscores its confidence in Malaysia’s potential as a strategic automotive hub in the region.

Notably, this development further solidifies rumours of Hyundai’s decision to directly enter the Malaysian market. With this, Sime Darby would potentially transition from its role as the brand custodian to becoming a dealership partner.

The upcoming Kulim plant is a cornerstone of Hyundai’s broader strategy to enhance its footprint in Southeast Asia while catering to the Malaysian market’s growing demand. Over the next five years, it will deliver seven distinct models, reflecting Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.
