The Transport Ministry will begin utilizing port infrastructure to enforce against overloaded heavy vehicles starting on July 1st. The enhanced enforcement measures will be initially implemented at all federal ports in Peninsular Malaysia to augment road safety.
This measure is being taken as the current enforcement method, which involves JPJ personnel stopping and escorting vehicles to weigh stations, limits the number of inspections possible, according to its minister Anthony Loke.

For import transactions, the system will automatically refuse bookings if the weight exceeds the Gross Vehicle Combination Weight, prohibiting vehicles from entering the port for cargo retrieval.

As for export operations, trucks will be weight-tested at port entrance points and refused access if found to be overloaded, as explained by the transport minister.
“Further details on this policy will be announced by the respective Port Authorities,” he said.

While acknowledging that stricter requirements could lead to increased costs for service providers, Loke emphasized the necessity of tackling a persistent road safety concern.
