Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof recently officiated the launch of New Energy Asia Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Malaysia’s HICOM Engineering Sdn Bhd (HESB) and China’s Hangzhou Flash Charging New Energy Co. Ltd. (HFC).

The partnership is set to play a key role in accelerating Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, especially as the country pushes toward its goal of installing 10,000 EV charging stations by the end of 2025.

Fadillah said the target could be achieved ahead of schedule if more companies follow suit with similar collaborations. As of now, the recently updated MEVNet data shows 4,161 chargers have been rolled out - 2,857 AC and 1,304 DC.

The two firms together aim to roll out a new generation of charging equipment and advanced energy storage solutions, not just for Malaysia, but across the ASEAN region.

New Energy Asia has secured exclusive rights to market Lotus-branded EV chargers in the region. Among its highlights is a powerful 450 kW liquid-cooled DC fast charger that can bring the Lotus Emeya from 10% to 80% charge in just 14 minutes.

The line-up also includes a range of AC and DC chargers, from 7 kW wall units for home use, to robust 240 kW and 450 kW DC chargers tailored for commercial and highway deployment. These can also be customised to suit different user needs.

Currently, popular EV charger brands deployed by charge point operators (CPOs) include ABB, KemPower, Autel, Sangitech, and e.Loded. The question now is: which CPO will be the first to roll out these new Lotus-branded chargers?

Aside from EV charging, the joint venture will also supply battery energy storage systems to help support Malaysia’s shift toward sustainable energy, in line with its goal of reaching Net-Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050.

Fadillah, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said the collaboration reflects growing Malaysia-China cooperation in green technology.

He believes efforts like this will not only support the country's energy transition but also boost EV adoption by making charging more accessible and convenient.

The government, he added, fully backs such initiatives, calling them essential to building a cleaner and more resilient future for Malaysia.
