Amir Hamzah: No Back-to-Back Pumping of RM1.99 RON95 A Day

The government says it will tighten controls on the RON95 targeted subsidy, warning that repeated subsidised refuels in a single day will not be allowed.

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the measure is meant to stop abuse and ensure that only eligible Malaysians enjoy the cheaper RM1.99 fuel, not foreigners or opportunists.

“We will not allow individuals to make multiple subsidised petrol refuels in a single day. The government has complete records of usage, including how many times petrol is purchased in a day or month,” he said in George Town.

In other words, with Budi95 tied to MyKad, every trip to the pump now comes under government eyes. What began as a subsidy mechanism increasingly looks like a tool that tracks motorists’ every movement. And with each safeguard introduced, another loophole seems to open, demanding yet another patch.

The question now is how such limits will affect long-distance drivers who may genuinely need to refuel more than once a day. Amir Hamzah promised further details soon, but it’s clear the government will be playing catch-up as it rolls out the system.

Under BUDI95, which takes effect Sept 30, only Malaysian citizens with valid driving licences and Malaysian-registered vehicles can purchase RON95 petrol at the subsidised rate of RM1.99 per litre, capped at 300 litres a month.
