- Rapid Rail To Install Temporary LRT Platform Barriers Starting Year-End
Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd will begin installing temporary platform barriers along the Ampang/Sri Petaling and Kelana Jaya LRT lines by the end of this year, as part of a fast-track effort to enhance commuter safety.
Acting chief executive officer Nor Azmi Mohd Yusof said the barriers will cover around 70% of platform openings and are expected to take about 16 months to complete.
He explained that this marks the first phase of Rapid Rail’s broader plan to improve passenger safety, with permanent platform screen doors to be introduced in the second phase.
“The installation of platform screen doors will require considerably more time. Given the urgency of improving safety for passengers on the platforms, we have decided to proceed with barriers first,” he said in a The Star report.
The initiative follows two fatal incidents in recent months that involved one on June 3, when a Taiwanese man was struck by a train at Pusat Bandar Puchong station, and another on February 22, when a visually impaired man fell onto the tracks at Titiwangsa station.
He added that daily ridership reached 1.028 million in September, exceeding the target of 992,000, and reflecting an 11% increase compared to the same period last year.
“This increase shows more people are returning to public transport and that means we have to make sure every passenger feels safe,” he noted.
