Genting Highlands Set To Introduce Vehicle Fee to Boost Safety

Motorists traveling up to Genting Highlands will soon face a vehicle fee, Genting Malaysia Bhd has confirmed. The company said the charge is intended to support maintenance and safety measures along the 24 KM private road that winds up the mountain.

Details such as the fee amount and start date are yet to be finalised. The move comes as Genting Malaysia seeks to manage rising costs for maintaining Jalan Genting Highlands and its surrounding slopes, a responsibility it has shouldered alone since the 1960s.

Built on challenging terrain, the road provides access not only to Resorts World Genting but also to other destinations along the highlands corridor. Genting Malaysia said heavy usage has caused significant wear and tear, making constant upkeep essential for safety.

Working on steep and unstable terrain is both dangerous and costly. Teams are stationed at mid hill and hilltop around the clock to respond to emergencies and carry out repairs. The company described the fee as a private initiative on privately owned land, guided by the user pays principle.

This, it said, is the most sustainable way to cover maintenance, slope reinforcement and unforeseen incidents for the benefit of all road users.

The announcement follows a stop work order issued by the Bentong Municipal Council in October 2023, when a toll gantry near Gohtong Jaya was being built without formal plans or approvals.

Back then officials clarified that the council could not approve toll collection, which would require review by the Pahang state government, its investment and privatisation department, and relevant federal ministries.

Genting Malaysia’s latest confirmation suggests the long-stalled toll proposal may finally have secured the necessary approvals, paving the way for the vehicle fee on the privately owned road.

Jalan Genting Highlands plays a key role in the local economy, supporting tourism, enabling small businesses, creating jobs, and contributing to both the Pahang state and national economies. Ensuring its safety and reliability is essential for continued economic and tourism growth.
