Ford Uses Mustang Mach-E As Its EV Champion In China
Ford will be using its latest Mustang Mach-E model to start its electric vehicle (EV) product line-up in China. The Mustang Mach-E will be manufactured by Changan Ford.
Tesla has the upper hand of American EV automakers setting up manufacturing facilities in China. The company started deliveries of the locally-built Model 3 sedan at the beginning of 2020 with a price starting from 250,000 Yuan after subsidies.
However, both the Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y (fully-imported) are larger crossovers similar in size with the Toyota Harrier and BMW X4. Ford also said that the GT Performance Edition that does the 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds will be locally-built too.
In the US, the Mustang Mach-E is offered in configurations blending single or dual motors with two different battery capacities. The line-up begins with the Select variant with a 266 hp single rear motor paired with a 68-kWh battery pack, delivering a driving range of 370 kilometres.
For an extended driving range, the Premium variant with an 88-kWh battery offers 480 kilometres of travel when tested strict American EPA regulation. Ford is trying to deliver a Chinese-made Mustang Mach-E with over 600 kilometres of driving range.
Apart from featuring the Ford Co-Pilot360 Level 2+ partially autonomous driving system at certain designated highways, the Mustang Mach-E will also have cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology that connects the vehicles to traffic infrastructure.
The Mustang Mach-E will also have Firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) software update capabilities to continuously refresh features and performance.
According to news reports, sales of electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen-powered vehicles in China are forecast to rise to 20% of new car sales by 2025 from just 5% last year.
