Volvo Cars has sold over 113,000 Plug-In Electric Vehicles (PHEV) so far this year.  Compared to last year, the company sold 189,216 of its PHEV models which saw 27.1% of the total volume.

The XC60 was the best-selling model for Volvo Cars in August, selling 16,161 vehicles followed by the XC40 and XC90 models, each selling 9,766 and 7,678 units, respectively.

In August 2022, the company’s global sales gathered 43,666 units of vehicles, a 4.6% decline from the same month last year. The company’s sales fell to 379,631 during the first eight months of the year, a significant fall of 21.5%.

Meanwhile, sales in Europe have decreased by 15.8%, with only 10,995 items sold, although China has sold a total of 17,179 cars, increasing its share of global sales to 31%.

Despite these decreased sales, there is still a strong demand for their models, particularly for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Sales in the US fell by 30% year over year to 1,380 in August recorded 206 BEVs and 1,174 PHEVs. The Volvo C40 Recharge and the Volvo XC40 Recharge are the company's two electric-only versions.

According to Volvo Cars, the company has recently had trouble keeping up with the supply of vehicles due to the demand. The lockdowns of suppliers and plant makers in China posed a considerably bigger issue than the drop in sales.

Volvo will soon release the next-generation BEVs, which are anticipated to increase sales.

Volvo XC90 Patent Image

Recently, the company released an all-electric XC90 in patent image which is scheduled to debut globally by end of 2022. The model sports 2023 Volvo Embla Badge which adopts aesthetic patterns from the Polestar 2, which is built on the XC40.

Although some have suggested that the leaked image could be of a hybrid XC90, the closed grille points to an all-electric drivetrain. When viewed from the back, it bears a startling resemblance to the Polestar 2.
