US-Only Volvo XC60 Black Edition Is A Tasteful Blacked-Out Special
Announced this week is the blacked-out Volvo XC60 Black Edition special made for North America.
Announced specifically for the North American market this week, the Volvo XC60 Black Edition may be an aptly-named special, but it arguably is one very tastefully executed special indeed.
Reserved solely for the range-topping Ultimate trim of said mid-sized crossover SUV, the Black Edition treatment sees the XC60 don a Black Onyx paintjob matched with gloss black-finished 21-inch five-spoke wheels, blacked-out badges, plus a front grille that’s also been blacked-out.
Matching the familiar Onyx Black paintjob in this special are its gloss black-finished 21-inch wheels plush blacked out grille and badges.
On board, the Black Edition treats the XC60’s cabin with a host of – you guessed it – black-hued touches, namely the headliner, and both the nappa leather or textile seat and cabin upholstery. Offering some contrast here is the presence of aluminium cabin trims plus the signature Orrefors crystal shift knob.
Apart from this darkened yet surprisingly stylish aesthetic redux, this special edition XC60 remains mechanically unchanged. It soldiers on with the familiar Volvo plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup featuring a 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbo mill working with an electric motor plus an 18.8 kWh battery.
On board, the Black Edition gets either nappa leather or textile upholstery choices plus its headliner finished in black. Added contrast is supplied by the aluminium trims plus Orrefors crystal shift knob.
Altogether, this setup generates 455 HP and 708 NM combined to drive all four wheels, enabling 0-60 MPH (96 KM/H) in about 4.5 seconds. With a full charge, the aforementioned battery and electric motor also enables up to 56 KM of full-electric driving.
Volvo is now taking orders for this special from its North American customers ahead of planned deliveries starting early next year. Whilst this is an exclusive offer for American buyers, we’re certain a similar treatment would bode well with prospects in other markets such as ours.
Though simple in tweaks, the end-result of the blacked-out special does appear very tasty indeed.
Presently, Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) still offers the XC60 in similar Recharge Ultimate PHEV guise with an Onyx Black paint option, though it doesn’t get the blacked-out wheels, exterior trims, and matching blacked-out cabin to match. Said electrified SUV also presently retails at RM355,888 sans insurance.
By the way, we've revisited the XC60's larger XC90 sibling recently, which you can read about by clicking here. If you're more keen on a full EV offering instead, then check out our twin-test of both the XC40 and C40 Recharge by clicking here.
