2022 Saw Proton Deliver 141,432 Vehicles, Marking 23.3% YoY Growth

Proton ended 2022 with a fourth consecutive year of sales growth. In its latest press statement, the national carmaker revealed that it successfully delivered  141,432 cars throughout 2022, marking its highest ever delivery levels since 2013.

Bolstering said figures were the 14,750 cars it delivered in December 2022. Altogether, the effort sees Proton stand as the country’s second best-selling car brand in 2022 with a market share of 19.6%.

Despite supply interruptions caused by floods at the start of the year, as well as an extreme shortage in the worldwide semiconductor sector, the national carmaker reported a 23.3% Year-on-Year (YoY) increase in total sales.

Proton also shared that its total sales for the international market increased by 79.1% to 5,406 units in the same period. This, in turn, also allowed Proton to end the year as the industry's leading exporter.

"Overall, the company has maintained its second position in the industry with an estimated market share of 19.6 percent. Total Industry Volume (TIV) for 2022 is estimated to exceed 720,000 units, a new industry record high, on top of record-breaking December sales,” said Roslan Abdullah, Proton’s deputy CEO.

“Meanwhile, sales for five of Proton’s six models increased in 2022 with three models ending the year as segment leaders," added Roslan further.

Of the three models mentioned, the Proton X50 stood as the country's best-selling SUV in December where it saw 3,764 units sold. Its overall sales performance up to that point stood at 40,681 units, marking a 41.4% increase compared to 2021 too.

The Proton Saga, on the other hand, continues to be Proton's best-selling model with 5,913 units delivered in December. Altogether, 55,878 units of the Saga were delivered throughout 2022, which marks a 31.1% increase over the previous year too.

The national car brand also expects the TIV to decline from the record 2022 volume as shipments of orders placed during the sales tax exemption period will be fulfilled by the end of March. The firm further adds that although interest rates are also projected to climb this year, it will be difficult for the industry to continue increasing sales.

Nevertheless, Proton remains confident in charting more growth. The brand is set to welcome new additions to their line up through several new model launches planned for this year.
