Porsche Cayenne Electric Confirmed, More EV Models Coming Mid-Decade

The Porsche Annual Press Conference this year saw the automaker announcing an electrified Cayenne is under the works, poised to be launched later this decade. This revelation confirms many speculations and rumours about an upcoming electrified version of the marque’s best-selling model.

Aside from the Cayenne, Porsche’s future electric line-up will also feature the 'K1' sporty electric SUV prototype, the long-delayed electric Macan – poised to be launched as early as 2024, as well as the much-anticipated all-electric 718 – also planned to be launched by the middle of this decade. This is part of the marque’s plan to provide zero-emission alternatives to its ICE-powered fleets, aside from developing synthetic e-fuels.

The Cayenne EV – or whatever Porsche will call it later – will underpin the same Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture as its smaller SUV sibling the Macan EV. This means that the all-electric Cayenne might also come with the same advanced torque-vectoring technology, as well as the four-wheel steering feature.
Said PPE platform is also confirmed to be fitted with 800 V architecture that enables up to 270 kW of charging capacity. Though no specifications were unveiled on the electric Cayenne’s battery capacity, the Macan EV’s 100-kWh battery offering should be a good place to start.
Should Porsche fitted a bigger battery pack on the electric Cayenne, it will by right compete toe-to-toe or even surpass its fellow German rival EV crossover, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.

In terms of powertrain, the electric Macan will boast a dual-motor setup that outputs a total of 603 HP and up to 1,000 NM, while having greater efficiency and power density compared to the current Taycan EV. Should the electric Cayenne emulate the Macan’s powertrain setup, it will be significantly more powerful than the ICE-powered Cayenne S and GTS.
Aside from providing carbon-neutral alternatives to their line-up, Porsche’s decision to go electric for the new Cayenne also stems from the model’s sheer sales volume. Thanks to the unprecedented surge of demands for SUVs worldwide, both Cayenne and Macan together account for almost 59% of Porsche’s global annual sales in 2022, racking up 95,604 and 86,724 units respectively.
With the Porsche Cayenne electric headlining a slew of other EV models, the Stuttgart-based marque bids to make EVs account for more than 80% of its total sales by the end of this decade.
Other than that, Porsche’s Annual Press Conference also saw the marque announcing the Road to 20 initiative. Porsche aims to reach a group operating return on sales of more than 20% in the long term.
