2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate Lands As Sleeker SUV Alternative

In the burgeoning days of SUVs and crossovers, it is somewhat refreshing to see some automakers like Mercedes-Benz are still keeping the ol’ estate bodystyle alive and well. With the current-gen Mercedes-Benz C-Class already getting an estate variant, it is time for its bigger brother, the newly-launched W214 E-Class saloon to be getting the long-roof treatment.
Unveiled globally today is the all-new 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate. Codenamed S214, the new E-Class wagon truly stands as a sleeker and more stylish alternative to the bulky and boxy SUVs out there, while offering the same level of practicality and space as its tall-riding counterparts.

2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate
For this next-gen iteration, the E-Class Estate is bigger and roomier than the model it replaces, now measuring 4,949 MM long, 1,880 MM wide, 1,469 MM tall, and a wheelbase of 2,961 MM. This bulk-up not only grants the wagon with roomier cabin and cargo space, but also makes it the biggest amongst the three Merc wagons.

The third-row seat delete means you'll get roomier cabin and cargo space
In spite of this bulk-up, the new E-Class wagon is not offered with third-row seat option, which means you get up to 615-litre of cargo space for the standard variant. However, opting for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant will see the roomy cargo space dropped to only 460-litre.

Just like its saloon twin, the E-Class Estate stood as a stylish-looking wagon. The front half of the wagon looks exactly like the saloon version, which means it also comes with the new front fascia featuring stunning three-point-star grille pattern and prominent air vents, as well as the stunning 21-inch multi-spoke wheels. Said wheels are only available in certain range-topping variants, as the baseline model gets smaller 17-inch ones instead.

The long-roof treatment not only grants the E-Class Estate its sleek look and roomy cabin, but also helps to drop its drag coefficient from the sedan’s 0.27 rate down to 0.26. Elsewhere, the rear part of the wagon sports the similar-looking taillights design as the sedan version, which also features the new three-point-star emblem signature inside them.
The dual-screen MBUX superscreen layout can be further expanded into three
On board, the E-Class Estate gets the same next-gen equipment as its W214 sedan twin. Up front lies the latest MBUX superscreen dashboard display with an option to add a third screen at the front passenger’s dash. Aside from the usual mobile connectivity support (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay) and sat-nav, this infotainment system allows you to stream video services like YouTube or Netflix, while the presence of a selfie camera allows you to use video conferencing apps like Zoom and Webex.

Aside from that, this wagon also comes standard with Digital Key for both Android and Apple devices, automated parking system with remote and memory parking functions, active ambient lighting system, Burmester premium audio system, plush leather seats and upholstery, and many more.
For the European markets, Mercedes-Benz is offering the E-Class wagon in three variants – the E200 petrol, the E220d (diesel), as well as the E300e PHEV, with both the non-PHEV variants get partial electrification via a 48-volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) system.
Starting with the petrol variant, the E200 is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged engine rated at 201 HP and 320 NM. When mated to the 48-volt MHEV setup, the E200 can blast from nought to 100 KM/H in 7.8 seconds, en route to its V-max of 231 KM/H.
The diesel-powered E220d variant, on the other hand, harnesses a 2.0-litre 4-cyl diesel engine that delivers 194 HP and 440 NM. This grants the E220d a 0-100 KM/H sprint time of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 230 KM/H.

2024 Mercedes-Benz E300e Estate Plug-in Hybrid
As for the E300e PHEV, it combines the same 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged engine from the E200 with a 129 HP and 440 NM-rated PHEV electric motor setup to deliver a total system output of 308 HP. Merc claims this plug-in wagon can go from 0 to 100 KM/H in just 6.5 seconds, en route to its electronically-limited top speed of 227 KM/H.
Said electric motor is juiced by a sizable 25.4-kWh battery pack that grants the E300e with a maximum EV range of 100 KM (WLTP) – doubling the range of the old E-Class PHEV wagon it replaces.

The all-new 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate is slated to go on sale in selected European countries beginning this fall, with the rest of the globe getting them next year. Aside from the three initial variants, the German marque also confirms plans to launch several other variants, including a diesel PHEV version, as well as the souped-up AMG version. For the latter, it remains to be seen whether it’ll continue to employ the peppy V8 powertrain as its predecessor, or will it opt for the more ‘frugal’ V6 setup instead.
