Volvo Will Cease Diesel Production By Early 2024, Full EV Line-Up By 2030

Volvo is set to have an all-electric line-up by 2030. Ahead of which, it will cease production of its diesel models by early 2024.
Swedish carmaker Volvo is on course with its carbon neutrality goals as it aims towards an all-electric line-up by the year 2030. Considering which, the marque has just announced plans to cease production of its diesel models early next year (2024).
“In a few months from now, the last diesel-powered Volvo car will have been built, making Volvo Cars one of the first legacy car makers to take this step,” says the firm in a press statement issued globally earlier today.
Volvo adds that the decision to fully phase out its diesel models illustrates how rapidly both the industry and consumer demand have changed in the face of the climate crisis. Up until four years, ago diesel-powered models were Volvo’s bread and butter in the European market.
Presently, Volvo's full EV offerings consist of the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge.

Volvo's full EV line up will soon include the EX30 (left) and flagship EX90 (right).
Volvo continues by highlighting that having less diesel cars on the streets will positively affect urban air quality. Although diesel engines emit less CO2 than petrol engines, they do emit more gases such as nitrogen oxide (NOx), and this can have adverse effect on air quality, especially in built-up areas.
Moreover, this move aligns with Volvo’s recent decision to cease development of new combustion engines. Just last month, it sold its stake in Aurobay, the joint venture company that harboured all its remaining combustion engine assets. Said JV has also not pursued any portion of its R&D budget on developing new internal combustion engines.
“We’re fully focused on creating a broad portfolio of premium, fully electric cars that deliver on everything our customers expect from a Volvo - and are a key part of our response to climate change,” said Jim Rowan, Chief Executive at Volvo Cars.
