Planned Toyota Rebadge Of Suzuki Jimny And Swift Blocked
-full.jpg)

Toyota and Suzuki already have a cooperation that resulted in the latter rebadging the former's RAV4 (Right) as the Across (left).
Toyota is no stranger to the efforts rebadging models from other marques like Suzuki, especially in selected and emerging markets worldwide. A prime example of this is the existence of the Suzuki Across – effectively a Suzuki-badged Toyota RAV4.
However, it seems not everything under Suzuki’s umbrella is readily up for Toyota to rebadge. Recently, Autocar India reports that the latter giant’s plans to rebadge Suzuki’s iconic Jimny compact 4x4 and Swift hatchback were blocked, with the latter S-brand having “politely declined” the request.
“It’s like asking Toyota to let us badge engineer the Land Cruiser. Models that are at the heart of our brand are not meant for sharing and both companies respect that,” said one Suzuki spokesperson to Autocar India recently.

It seems Toyota had plans to rebadge both of Suzuki's Swift and Jimny models, but the latter S-brand "politely declined" said request.
Though Toyota does own a minor stake (5%) in Suzuki, rebadging both the Jimny and Swift models does risk diluting their iconic status should they bear the Toyota insignia instead. Adding to which are the slightly different product positioning Toyota had envisioned for each.
For instance, had Toyota been granted allowance to rebadge the Jimny, the brand reportedly would’ve angled it as a cheaper and more affordable 4x4 alternative over its existing larger and more expensive crossovers and SUVs – Land Cruiser, RAV4, Harrier, etc.
Perhaps this was for the best especially after considering that both the Jimny and Swift models hold integral role in the company's DNA. In the case of the Jimny, perhaps a rebadged effort might not sit well amongst its massive cult-like followers and fanbase.

Limited-run Swift Silver Edition (left) and Jimny Rhino Edition (right) released by Suzuki distributors Naza Eastern Motors in 2023.
Locally, both the Jimny and Swift stand as the only two models on offer through brand custodians Naza Eastern Motors. The firm had released limited-run specials for each in 2023, and we even had a go in one – the Jimny Rhino Edition – not too long ago too.
What do you folks think? Were Toyota perhaps ambitious to request Suzuki permission to rebadge its staple Jimny and Swift models? As usual, share your thoughts in the comments below, as well as our social media pages...
