Anwar Praises MACC’s Investigation On SPANCO
According to NST, Datuk Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reportedly reaffirmed the government's unwavering commitment to fighting corruption by highlighting the exhaustive investigations and firm actions taken by law enforcement against all parties involved in the SPANCO case.
During his time as Finance Minister under Tun Dr Mahathir, the premier also discussed the controversy surrounding the tender for the government's vehicle supply, repair, and maintenance project (Fleet Project), which was awarded to SPANCO.
He also praised the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) for their unwavering dedication to carrying out their mandates and looking into those involved.
As part of its investigation into allegations of corruption pertaining to the acquisition and administration of the government's RM4.5 billion fleet of vehicles, MACC raided the home of a businessman on Jan 20.
SPANCO Sdn Bhd had held the concession for the management and supply of government vehicles since 1993. However, after the contract ended in 2019, an open tender was initiated. Later, in the same year, Berjaya Group and Naza Sdn Bhd came together to form a consortium and won the contract through a Letter of Intent (LoI).
However, based on a social post from Kajang Police Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) unit, it can pretty much be confirmed that SPANCO is still the vehicle supplier to all government departments after having just delivered the latest FE generation Honda Civic patrol vehicles.
In July, Vincent Tan, the founder of Berjaya, filed a lawsuit against the Finance Ministry and SPANCO over the terminated LoI, alleging that the contract was awarded to SPANCO despite their costlier pitch.
Tan's allegations prompted calls for a MACC investigation, but there were no developments until the recent raid in Jan.
Based on SPANCO’s website, the outfit is currently managing 14,127 vehicles supplied to 36 government agencies and ministries. There are also 427 accredited service centres under their management.
