PMX: Proton’s International Success a Model for Malaysia
Malaysia has officially launched its first Proton electric vehicle (EV) factory, a milestone Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says reflects not just technological progress, but also the strength of Malaysia-China cooperation through Proton and its strategic partner, Geely.
Among those present at the factory launch were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang and Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
Speaking at the launch earlier today, Anwar said the partnership has gone beyond investment, opening doors for technology transfer and training local engineers to master future automotive technologies.
“I want to thank the government of China because in several of my meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, their willingness to cooperate has been clear. This includes technology transfer and providing opportunities for locals to be part of the industry,” he said, as reported by Bernama.
The Prime Minister also called on Proton Holdings Bhd to expand its global presence, highlighting the brand’s strong foothold in Egypt, where it has become one of the most popular and affordable cars.
He recalled how Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly personally praised Proton’s success during a recent meeting in Beijing, describing its performance there as “very encouraging,” Malay Mail reported.
“This shows that our strong relations with other countries are helping local industries break barriers and compete abroad,” Anwar said.
Anwar added that Proton’s international momentum will gain further visibility during the upcoming Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October, where leaders from across Asia, Australia, New Zealand, India, Latin America, South Africa and Italy are expected.
“I’ve asked Proton to be given space to showcase our EVs during the summit so leaders can see first-hand Proton’s technology and capabilities. We’re looking at new markets including South Africa and Brazil,” he said.
Proton’s first EV, the e.MAS 7, was the official vehicle of the Asean Summit in May, while its second model, the e.MAS 5, is set for an official launch in Q4 this year.
