The Sarawak–Sabah Link Road Phase 2 (SSLR2), a 335km project costing RM7.6 billion, was launched yesterday in Nanga Medamit, Limbang by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The ceremony was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, Deputy Prime Ministers, federal ministers and state leaders.

SSLR2 will connect Miri, Marudi, Mulu, Limbang, Lawas and Ba’kelalan, creating a vital land route from Sarawak into Sabah. Undertaken by Maltimur Aktif Unggul (MAUJV) Sdn Bhd and supervised by JKR Sarawak, the project includes bridges, elevated structures, lighting, drainage and environmental safeguards.

Anwar described SSLR2 as “the lifeline of development,” opening long-isolated areas to safer travel and wider opportunities. “For decades, communities here have waited. With SSLR2, they will benefit from investment, agriculture growth and eco-tourism,” he said.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi meanwhile highlighted SSLR2’s role in boosting Sarawak–Sabah integration and linking it to the Pan Borneo and Trans Borneo networks. He urged full cooperation from stakeholders, including logging firms along the route.

“This is a rakyat’s project, and no company should be an obstacle. With strong collaboration, we aim to complete ahead of schedule so people enjoy its benefits sooner,” he said.

SSLR2 follows the momentum of SSLR Phase 1, which began in Lawas and has already reached 57.6% completion. Together, the two phases mark a new chapter in East Malaysia’s connectivity, underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and national unity.
