The Audi R8 Production Has Officially Ended

Audi has officially ended the production of the R8 supercar, with no replacement in sight for now.

After almost two decades of production, the enigmatic Audi R8 supercar is officially dead, following Audi’s decision to cease its production. Prior to its production commencement, the final R8 had rolled off the assembly line at the Audi Böllinger Höfe production facility in Germany.

As tipped by Top Gear UK, the last Audi R8 is in the form of a V10 Performance Quattro Edition, draped in Vegas Yellow with a carbon fibre styling package, while riding on 20-inch bronze wheels. The news outlet also reported that the final R8 will be exhibited at a museum as a reminder to future generations of what Audi used to be.

Previewed as the Le Mans quattro concept back at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show, the R8 officially started its life three years later in 2006 as Audi’s high-performance halo supercar. The R8 by itself has helped to propel Audi as a brand to new heights, not only due to its iconic design and sheer performance but also through its cameo in the 2008 original Iron Man movie, serving as the hero car for Tony Stark.

Riding on the success of this car, Audi has decided to introduce the second-gen R8 at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. This new car features more angular and sharp design elements while retaining the R8’s signature, mid-engined supercar look. Additionally, Audi also unleashed a short-lived, all-electric version of the R8, known as the R8 e-tron.

The Audi R8 Coupe V10 GT RWD is the final special edition model for the R8, launched back in 2022.

The R8’s production commencement does not come as a big surprise, as Audi previously announced its demise back in 2023, while being hinted back in 2022 when they launched the R8 Coupe V10 GT RWD run-out special. Following this announcement, Audi received a surge of orders for the R8, which forced the automaker to push its deadline and extend production by a few more months.

The Audi R8 is set to be replaced by an all-electric supercar, albeit carrying a different nameplate.

As of now, Audi has confirmed plans to replace the R8 with an all-electric supercar model, with its development being “well underway” as of October last year. However, Audi insists that this new EV supercar won’t be the direct successor to the R8, as it will bear a totally different name.

The R8 is the second pure ICE sportscar to be totally axed from Audi’s lineup in recent times, with the previous one being the iconic Audi TT. Like the R8, the TT will also reportedly get a new, all-electric successor, possibly riding on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) EV architecture that Audi co-developed with its German sister/rival brand Porsche.
