New MINI Cooper JCW E Teased Ahead of Goodwood Debut
The new MINI John Cooper Works E has been teased as the first all-electric JCW model ahead of its Goodwood debut.
Following the debut of the next-gen MINI Cooper EV hatch, MINI has now confirmed the arrival of the first all-electric model to bear the John Cooper Works (JCW) name, the MINI Cooper JCW E. Ahead of its planned debut at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed this year, MINI has revealed several teaser images and shed light on some specs of this upcoming EV hot hatch.
Still engulfed in a camouflage wrap, the upcoming MINI Cooper JCW E will make its ‘racing’ cameo by participating in Goodwood’s infamous hill climb challenge. This could be the perfect place for MINI to flex the JCW E’s “advanced electric powertrain," thus suggesting that it’ll make more power than the MINI Cooper SE.
For reference, the MINI Cooper SE’s 215 HP motor setup allows the EV hatch for a decent century sprint finish of 6.7 seconds. Meanwhile, its upcoming petrol-powered counterpart, the new MINI Cooper JCW, boasts a peppier powertrain output that allows for a faster century sprint time of 6.1 seconds.
MINI production line boss Dr. Srefan Floeck (left) promises that the new MINI Cooper JCW E (right) will be engineered to provide similar performance as its ICE-powered twin.
Just like the petrol-powered Cooper JCW, MINI production line boss Dr. Stefan Floeck told Autocar UK that the all-electric MINI Cooper JCW E will be engineered to provide on-par performance to its ICE-powered twin. The MINI rep also implied that the JCW E will retain the Cooper EV’s front-wheel-drive (FWD) electric motor setup, citing that the car’s lower centre of gravity due to its battery pack allows the FWD setup to perform better.
“The most important thing when it’s a front-driven car is that on one side you have a big benefit, because the centre of gravity is lower, because you have the battery in the bottom,” Floeck told Autocar UK.
Floeck also added that the MINI Cooper JCW E has also been designed to feature the closest 50/50 front-and-rear weight balance, which combines with its lower centre of gravity to deliver better driving dynamics. To compensate for the extra toll the battery packs carry, the JCW-badged EV hatch will get a stickier set of tyres with a bigger diameter compared to its bare-boned twin.
Given that the current-gen MINI Cooper EV underpins a platform that can support dual-motor AWD setups, there’s a faint chance that the JCW E might get a peppier twin-motor setup instead of one. But regardless of its powertrain nature, Floeck stated that the new JCW EV hatch has been engineered to retain MINI’s signature “go-kart feeling” that defines the British brand.
We can expect to learn more about the new MINI Cooper JCW E once the EV hot-hatch makes its first public debut at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. This will be followed by a proper global debut, which is set to take place later in Fall this year.
