BYD Sold Over 500,000 Vehicles For The First Time In Oct
Warren Buffet-backed EV maker BYD, made history in October 2024 when it sold more than 500,000 vehicles in a single month for the first time, solidifying its place as a major force in the EV market.
The number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold reached a record-breaking 502,657, representing a 66% increase from October 2023's 301,095 units. The fact that 500,526 of these cars were electric passenger models is noteworthy and shows how determined BYD is to control the EV market.
The fact that BYD achieved 502,657 NEV sales in October, a 20% increase over September's figures, shows that both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and all-electric vehicles (EVs) are steadily increasing in popularity. 310,912 of the total were PHEVs, a significant 129% increase over the previous year.
The remaining 189,614 were fully electric, a 15% increase over October 2023. With 483,437 sales in October alone, BYD's varied car lineup—especially the Ocean (Dynasty) series—helped to support the remarkable sales. Significant contributions were also made by the company's sub-brands, Fangcheangbao, Denza, and Yangwang, with 6,026, 10,781, and 282 units, respectively.
In addition to strong domestic sales, BYD is actively growing its global presence, including in Malaysia, where it has introduced the BYD Sealion 7 EV, which starts at RM 184,000.
In October, BYD sold nearly 32,000 passenger cars in overseas markets, and the company is showing no signs of slowing down. This momentum was expected to be sustained and BYD will be able to better satisfy local demand with strategic investments in new manufacturing facilities in Thailand, Turkey, Hungary, and Mexico.
BYD is becoming a more accessible choice in both developed and emerging markets thanks to its extensive product line, which includes luxury models, intelligent electric SUVs, and the affordable $10,000 Seagull EV.
With 462,890 EVs delivered during the quarter as opposed to BYD's 443,426 units, Tesla maintained a slim lead in EV sales. Tesla had sold 1,293,656 EVs so far this year, with BYD coming in second with 1,169,579 units as of October. Speculation about whether BYD could overtake Tesla in total EV sales by the end of the year has increased in response to the company's impressive October results.
BYD has set a target of 3.6 million vehicle sales in 2024. With year-to-date sales of 3,236,927 units by the end of October, a 36% increase over the same period last year, the EV giant should be able to easily meet this target. BYD's record of 500,526 electric passenger vehicles in October, a 66% increase year on year, reinforces the company's momentum as it approaches its goal.
