Xiaomi’s Second EV Is Here, And It’s An SUV
The YU7 SUV, Xiaomi's second EV, has been revealed as the company applies for a sales licence in China. The announcement, which also included the release of official photos and important specs, is another important step in Xiaomi's expansion into the EV sector. This comes after the company's initial model, the SU7, and its high-performance version, the SU7 Ultra, were released.
The vehicle's final specifications and design were validated in homologation filings submitted to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and it is scheduled to be constructed at Xiaomi's only plant in the Yizhuang district of Beijing.
The Xiaomi YU7 is a fully electric SUV with two electric motors that can generate 508kW of power between them. The SUV can travel up to 253 km/h thanks to a 220kW motor that powers the front axle and a 288kW motor that powers the rear. Energy is stored in a lithium NMC battery supplied by CATL, although details about capacity remain undisclosed.
The EV's specifications, which include a wheelbase of 3000 mm and measurements of 4999 mm in length, 1996 mm in width, and 1600 mm in height, highlight its roomy design. Even with its 2405 kg curb weight, the YU7 is expected to perform well.
Although Xiaomi hasn't yet unveiled the YU7's interior, it's very likely that the SUV will use the sedan's 16.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, along with rear-passenger screens and a minimalist, tech-forward design. Similar to the sedan, the LiDAR sensor positioned on the roof indicates the addition of sophisticated automated driving features, which Xiaomi is keen to promote as a key component of its EV lineup.
The YU7 follows the success of Xiaomi’s first EV, the SU7 sedan, launched in March 2024. Between March and November, more than 112,000 SU7s were shipped in China, surpassing initial sales goals. By year's end, Xiaomi hopes to deliver 130,000 devices.
It is anticipated that the YU7 will be priced between ¥250,000 and ¥350,000 when it is released in the middle of 2025. Xiaomi intends to increase its competitive presence in the EV market with the YU7, which is positioned as a contender to the Tesla Model Y, which starts at ¥249,900 in China.
