Police Investigating Alleged Accident Scam Attempt Caught On Dashcam In Kajang
A 14-second dashcam footage captured and shared on social media by a motorist commuting through the Jalan Sungai Long main road stretch in Bandar Sungai Long, Kajang went viral recently. In said footage, it depicts what appears to be an alleged ‘accident scam’ attempt.
Typical of such scams, it sees a pedestrian intentionally entering the path of an oncoming vehicle to cause a collision. The aim here is for the offending pedestrian to appear as the ‘victim’ in said collision, with the hopes of claiming compensation – usually money – from either the driver or owner of the vehicle that 'struck' them, or their insurance providers.

Screenshots of the viral 14-sec clip showing the pedestrian allegedly atempting a classic 'accident scam' along the Jalan Sungai Long main road stretch in Bandar Sungai Long, Kajang late last week.
Usually, such methods would’ve worked, given that law enforcement tends to side with the pedestrian ‘victim’ as they would usually have the subsequent injuries from said collision presented to justify their claims. Fortunately, in this case, the motorist involved had equipped their vehicle with a dashcam to prove they were not at fault, turning the tables on the alleged offender instead.
In fact, since the footage went viral, Kajang district police have initiated an investigation into incident, which they believed occurred late last week on Sept 17 in the late morning hours just before noon. Their efforts led to officers detaining a 32-year-old foreign national in the Bandar Sungai Long area believed to be the alleged perpetrator of the incident.

The alleged scam attempt also led to a small, two-car pile-up.
Not only this this alleged scam attempt (presumably) saw said suspect hurting themselves, it also caused a small two-car pile-up. This ensued as the dashcam vehicle was forced to a sudden halt after colliding with the pedestrian, which in turn caused another vehicle that was travelling in the same lane and direction behind to collide into the dashcam vehicle noted.
In the same social media post where the viral video was posted, images of the incident’s perpetrator, as well as the ensuing damages that occurred out of this incident, were shown clearly. Simply put, had there not been a dashcam in the vehicle that struck the pedestrian, said dashcam vehicle’s driver or owner could’ve been wrongfully accused instead.

Official statement issued by Kajang district police confirming the incident and that it is investigating it. Members of the public with information regarding the incident are also urged to come forward.
Additionally, in a statement issued via Facebook, Kajang district police added that the suspect could be charged first under Section 336 of the Penal Code – Rash or negligent act to endanger human life or the personal safety of others – that could entail with either a three-month prison term, a RM500 fine, or both.
Secondly, said suspect could also face a much harsher five-year prison term or a RM10,000 fine under Section 51 of the Immigration Act of 1959/63. This stems from the fact that the suspect mentioned had no personal identification document on hand. In short, the suspect could face not one, but two separate punishments if proven guilty.
In the same statement, Kajang district police are also urging anyone with information relating to this investigation to come forward to their nearest police station. Either way, this is perhaps a classic example of why you should seriously consider investing into and installing a dashcam in your vehicle.
