Stellantis Fully Acquires Punch Powertrain Joint Venture
Global automaking giant Stellantis revealed this week that it is taking full control of Punch Powertrain.
Global automaking giant Stellantis has announced earlier this week that it has agreed to fully acquire Punch Powertrain. A joint venture entity prior, Stellantis is set to take full control of the Belgian OEM best known for manufacturing transmissions.
In a brief announcement issued earlier this week, Stellantis revealed that full control came after it acquired all its remaining minority stake in said joint venture. The automaking giant declined to provide financial details of this buy-out, but’s expected to be worth quite a sum still.
Belgian OEM Punch Powertrain is already renowned as a transmission maker, and it currently produces eDCT transmissions for a slew of Stellantis models.
Stellantis says the move aims at strengthening its position in hybrid vehicle technology front. Prior to this takeover, the firm had jointly focused with Punch in producing dual-clutch transmissions (eDCT) for a slew of hybrid and plug-in electric vehicles available in its vast poducts and brand portfolio.
The firm also added that the decision affects its plants both in Metz, France, and at the Mirafiori complex in Turin, Italy – these are where the joint venture’s activities are ongoing with the production of the eDCT transmission type mentioned.
In turn, full acquisition means Stellantis will directly manage the development and production of the eDCT transmission and align it with the firm’s strategic expansion plans and renewal of its mild- (MHEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models range.
