Updated 2025 Xpeng G9 Debuts in China – Malaysia Soon?
The Xpeng G9 gets a 2025 model year update in China, featuring a next-gen intelligent driving system & upgraded powertrains.
Besides the new 2025 Xpeng G6, the Xpeng G9 EV SUV has also been given a 2025 model year (2025 MY) update in China. According to Xpeng Motors chairman He Xiaopeng, the new G9 contains no less than 66 upgrades, including the next-gen Turing AI intelligent driving system, an upgraded powertrain lineup, and many more.
Starting with the visuals, the G9 follows in the footsteps of its smaller sibling by having Xpeng’s latest X Robot Face 3.0 design. Some key exterior upgrades include new soft-closing doors with pop-out handles, an automatic tailgate, new 20-inch alloy wheels, and a special ‘Black Warrior’ version that adds black finishing on the wheels, logo, and fenders.
As Xpeng’s flagship SUV model, the G9 retains the same dimensions as the pre-updated model, spanning 4,891 MM long, 1,937 MM wide, 1,680 MM tall, and a wheelbase of 2,998 MM. For reference, the smaller Xpeng G6 measures 4,753 MM long, 1,920 MM wide, 1,650 MM tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 2,890 MM.
On board, the 2025 MY update saw the G9 gaining a new Moon Shadow Coffee interior colourway, on top of the existing Morning Glory Brown and Elegant Grey colour options. The three-screen layout has been retained for this updated model, featuring two 14.96-inch infotainment screens and a 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster—all of which are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip and support over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
Despite its larger facade, the G9 still gets a two-row five-seater layout, where the rear passenger compartment features a much larger space compared to the G6. Similarly, the front passenger seat can be fully reclined and comes with a built-in ottoman support, while amenities like dedicated A/C vents, multiple USB ports, and an expansive panoramic glass roof are all available at the rear.
Perhaps the biggest, headline-grabbing change added to the new G9 is the new generation Turing AI intelligent driving system. No longer requiring LiDAR hardware, this new system instead uses 26 sensors, 11 cameras, three millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic radars—all of which contribute to a 125% increase in visual perception distance and 40% faster recognition speed compared to the previous generation.
What’s equally important is the upgraded powertrain lineup for the new G9, with the baseline RWD variant getting a peppier single-motor unit now rated at up to 346 HP (258 kW) from the current 308 HP (230 kW), while peak torque is capped at 465 NM. Meanwhile, the dual-motor AWD gets an improved combined power of 567 HP (423 kW) and 695 NM.
Despite retaining the same 800-volt silicon carbide (SiC) platform as before, the upgraded G9 does benefit from a new 5C AI battery system with a new S5 liquid-cool supercharging technology. Both of these new technologies promise the new G9 to have a peak charging speed of up to 530 kW, which theoretically enables a 10-80% charge to be completed in just 12 minutes, Xpeng claims.
The respective battery capacities are retained from the previous model, with the RWD variant getting a smaller 79-kWh unit, while the peppier AWD model benefits from a larger 93.1-kWh pack. Thanks to the aforementioned upgrades, the updated G9 gets improved maximum range figures of up to 725 KM, at least according to the more lenient CLTC standards.
Sales for the updated 2025 Xpeng G9 are scheduled to begin later this year, although the pricing detail has not been revealed at this time. Given that local Xpeng brand distributor Bermaz Xpeng subtly confirmed that more Xpeng models will be heading into our market, there’s a high chance that the updated G9 will be the next model to make its local debut in the near future.
