Auto Shanghai 2025: Nissan Frontier Pro Debuts as Brand’s First PHEV
Silently making its global debut at Auto Shanghai 2025 is the new Nissan Frontier Pro—the brand’s first PHEV model.
Besides the barrage of futuristic concepts and new models, Nissan has silently debuted its latest model at the Auto Shanghai 2025 expo, the Nissan Frontier Pro. The new Frontier Pro is not only Nissan’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model but also its first electrified pick-up truck.
Penned by Nissan’s own Shanghai-based design team, the Frontier Pro gets a typical pick-up truck bodystyle, albeit with some futuristic design features that Nissan called ‘Rugged Tech.’ Some key exterior features include a grill-less front face featuring a full-width light bar and multi-stacked LED headlights, an illuminated Nissan logo, full-width LED taillights with illuminated Nissan typeface, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a power-retractable flatbed cover, to name a few.
In terms of dimensions, the Nissan Frontier Pro measures 5,520 MM long, 1,960 MM wide, 1,950 MM tall, and has a 3,300-MM wheelbase. This makes it slightly larger than other midsize pick-up trucks like its local combustion twin, the Nissan Navara, while being on the same level as its upcoming Chinese rival, the BYD Shark 6.
Given its futuristic exterior design, it is no surprise that the Frontier Pro gets a pretty upmarket cabin design, featuring tons of tech amenities. Some key features include a 14.6-inch central infotainment display, a 10-inch LCD instrument panel, a two-spoke steering wheel, a clean front dash setup with some physical buttons retained, heated and ventilated front seats with massage function for the driver, and many more.
On the mechanical front, the new Frontier Pro is essentially a redesigned version of China’s Nissan Dongfeng Z9 pick-up truck, as it underpins the same ladder-frame chassis and PHEV powertrain setup as its Dongfeng-made twin. Under the hood, the Frontier Pro hides a 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbopetrol engine and a transmission-mounted electric motor that work in tandem to deliver a total system output of over 402 HP and 800 NM. Juice is provided by a PHEV battery pack that grants the Frontier Pro up to 135 KM of CLTC range, while combined range is predicted to exceed the 1,000-KM mark.
Besides the PHEV setup, the new Frontier Pro gets an independent double wishbone front suspension with a five-link rear layout and gets an electromechanical rear diff lock with manually selectable 4High and 4Low modes. Not to forget, the PHEV truck also comes with four driving modes—Hybrid, Pure Electric, Performance, and Snow.
The all-new Nissan Frontier Pro PHEV will hit the Chinese market later this year before making its way into other international markets in the near future. Given that its aforementioned Chinese rival is slated to enter Thailand sometime later this year, perhaps there’s a chance that the new Frontier Pro will also be heading to the ASEAN market and eventually our local market too.
