Did Nissan Tease An All-New Fifth-Gen X-Trail Crossover?
Could this be a teaser of an all-new fifth-gen Nissan X-Trail C-SUV set to debut in North America in 2026?
It looks like Nissan’s bold ‘revival plan’ revealed last month still has some surprises we almost missed. Take this silhouette of what appears to be the new next-generation X-Trail crossover that formed of Nissan’s renewed line-up for North America.
Through the close-up crop of the teaser provided, we can see it shares a similar shape as the current fourth-gen X-Trail crossover SUV – a model that’s still NOT offered in our market at the time of writting. Additionally, the revamped front fascia mirrors what’s common across contemporary Nissan crossovers too – i.e. Qashqai and Murano.
The X-Trail teaser silhouette formed part of Nissan's renewed products planned for North America.
Critically, from what we can grasp through Nissan’s cryptic official press release, this upcoming follow-up to its core C-segment SUV offering is set to adopt the automaker’s latest e-Power electrified powertrain tech under its hood too. In turn, it will be Nissan’s first e-Power model to go on sale in North America as well.
As detailed prior, the Nissan e-Power extended range/range-extender (EREV/REEV) hybrid powertrain system employs a dedicated 1.5-litre thermally-efficient petrol mill that’s primarily tasked with juicing (charging) a new five-in-one e-motor unit that shares various key parts with Nissan’s latest EV powertrains.
Unique to this setup is of course the fact that its combustion (ICE) half mentioned doesn’t provide direct drive – it only charges its electrified half. Instead, the wheels are driven solely by the e-motor mentioned. Besides ultra-high efficiency, Nissan continues touting this setup’s ability at bringing EV-like drive dynamics minus both the range anxiety and charging hassle.
Current fourth-gen Nissan X-Trail e-Power teased by Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) at KLIMS 2024 in Dec last year. This iteration of the X-Trail is finally set for launch in Malaysia sometime this year.
Aside from the e-Power variant detailed, the new fifth-gen X-Trail is poised to see both conventional petrol and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions readied too. The latter likely stems form Nissan’s desperate need to get a PHEV model out the door first in North America – the automaker admitted recently it misread market demands for electrified petrol vehicles in this key market.
Closer to home though, don’t expect Nissan's fifth-gen rival to the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 to arrive so soon. Instead, the fourth-gen model mentioned will likely debut first this year packing a similar e-Power powertrain package as seen in its smaller Kicks sibling that finally debuted locally last year.
