Porsche Considers Quitting EVs in China
Porsche, long regarded as a symbol of luxury performance in China, is losing its edge. Chinese automakers have redefined luxury, combining high performance, superior artificial intelligence (AI), and affordability.
The result?
A new wave of local electric vehicles (EVs) is challenging the supremacy of traditional German companies, and Porsche is feeling left out.
Porsche experienced a 28% decrease in China sales in 2024, selling 79,283 units. The situation worsened in the first quarter of 2025, with cnEVPOST reporting a 42% year-over-year decline to just 9,471 units.
This downturn suggests that Porsche's high-end EV models, such as the Taycan and Macan, are struggling against competitively priced and robust EVs from domestic companies like Xiaomi.
At Auto Shanghai 2025, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume indicated a potential reduction or discontinuation of their EV division in China, stating the company will assess its viability as an electric brand in the region over the next two to three years.
"We will see in the next two to three years whether Porsche exists as an electric brand here," the exec says.
Despite the emergence of rivals like Xiaomi's SU7 Ultra, Porsche asserts that its vehicles provide a superior driving experience compared to more affordable options.
This stance contrasts with the apparent preference of Chinese consumers, given the significant price difference between a base Taycan in China (around $126,000) and the SU7 Ultra (starting at about $73,000).
Unlike Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, Porsche has not tailored its products specifically for the Chinese market. These other German manufacturers have invested in long-wheelbase models and market-specific electric sub-brands to cater to Chinese preferences.
The luxury carmaker, however, intends to maintain its global product strategy and has no immediate plans to produce vehicles solely for China.
