RON95 Petrol Subsidy Rationalisation Will Proceed – PMX
The government will proceed with the RON95 fuel subsidy rationalisation, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The Malaysian government will proceed with the RON95 fuel subsidy rationalisation, as it is crucial for the country, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking to NST, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said there is no issue of a RON95 price increase affecting the majority of Malaysians.
PMX also further insisted that the implementation of the subsidy rationalisation would ensure sufficient resources to assist the poor, enhance the quality of education, and provide better public services, including healthcare.
"Whatever the opposition says is just a gimmick, a desperate attempt to portray the people as suffering, to fuel more negative narratives. What we need are positive and encouraging developments to propel our economy forward.”
There is no issue of a fuel price hike for the vast majority, 85 to 90 percent of our population," he told NST after officiating Energy Asia 2025 in Kuala Lumpur today.
Prior to this statement, PMX previously insisted that the RON95 petrol price would not go up for Malaysians, and any future price changes would be based on market conditions instead.
To ensure this subsidy rationalisation implementation is fair, the government has also decided to use MyKad, citing its effective use in the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid program.
While the plan promises to ensure sufficient resources go to the right place, the Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) has urged the government to postpone them, at least until significant challenges affecting the sustainability of petrol stations are resolved.
PDAM president Khairul Annuar Abdul Aziz pointed out that the dealer profit margins, set by the automatic pricing mechanism, have remained unchanged since 2019 and are now insufficient to cover actual operating expenses.
