Loke Reaffirms KLIA Aerotrain’s Safety After Tunnel Flooding, Door Incident

Transport Minister Anthony Loke has reassured travellers that the new Aerotrain at KLIA Terminal 1 is running as expected and was built to meet global standards, Bernama has reported.

He said both the Transport Ministry and Malaysia Airports remain committed to maintaining a safe and seamless travel experience, with ongoing efforts to improve service and quickly resolve any issues.

“We’re still in the early stages of operation and making adjustments where needed. I truly appreciate the public’s patience as we fine-tune the system,” he said.

On Saturday, the Aerotrain service was briefly halted at 11AM after a heavy downpour caused water to pool in the tunnel.
Malaysia Airports explained that while the tunnel’s drainage system includes pumps designed to manage excess water, one of the older units failed during the storm, triggering a safety shutdown.

Loke clarified that the interruption had nothing to do with the newly upgraded Aerotrain. The system, he said, did exactly what it was designed to do, which is to detect abnormal conditions and stop the train before it could become a risk.

The minister also addressed a separate incident on July 2, where a passenger held the platform doors open, prompting the train’s safety sensors to prevent them from shutting automatically.

“That wasn’t a fault, that was the system doing its job,” he said, noting that both situations highlight how the Aerotrain’s safety features are built to prioritise people over convenience. “These systems are smart enough to stop the moment something feels off  and that’s exactly what we want.”
