Report: Mercedes-Benz A-Class Production Extended Until 2028

It appears that the Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback (centre, chassis code: V177) has reportedly gained another life cycle extension until 2028.

As reported prior, the renowned three-point star marque initially planned to axe the A-Class hatch and sedan by end of this year. Both models had already seen their respective life cycles extended by two years at said point.

Now, a new report indicates that the A-Class hatch (W177) – at least – will see another extension, this time until at least 2028. Take note, Mercedes has no plans for an A-Class hatch successor based on its new MMA platform, which already spawned the new CLA sedan.

This also comes despite repeated statements by CEO Ola Källenius that the hatch, as well as the B-Class MPV, would see production ceased by end of this year, ending two generations of models based on the brand’s outgoing MFA compact cars platform.

No successor to the A-Class hatch has been planned on the latest MMA platform, which Mercedes touted will see just four models - the CLA and CLA Shooting brake pictured, plus successors to the GLA and GLB.

Mercedes touted prior that its future compact car strategy based on the MMA platform mentioned will see just four models – CLA sedan, CLA Shooting Brake, plus successors to the GLA and GLB crossover SUVs.

Additionally, all will also see both electric (EV) and combustion (ICE) powertrain choices available on hand too.

Now, Autocar UK reports that the automaker will support said foursome with “an upgraded version of today’s A-Class hatchback,” and that production for which has been extended by up to three years.

The latter is supposedly driven by continued demand for the hatch in the European market, which is now pushing seven years in terms of age. Adding to which is the slower than expected take up rate for the three-point star marque’s newer EV models.

Autocar UK's report further adds that production of the A-Class Saloon (V177) has ended, though it's unclear if this applies to the range that's built locally by MBM  in Pekan, Pahang.

The report further adds that production of the A-Class Saloon (A-Class Sedan to us) – chassis code: V177 – has ended earlier this year, though it’s unclear if this also applies to the variants made here in Pekan, Pahang by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM).

Given that the MMA platform-based new CLA is meant to succeed which, we reckon it’s a matter of time before MBM Pekan also ceases production of the V177 range of sedans. It currently remains on sale locally with three variants available priced from RM216,888.

For now, the V177 A-Class Sedan range remains on sale locally. Pictured in the entry-level A200 Progressive Line variant that's priced at RM216,888.

Back to the hatch variant specifically and, despite tighter new Euro 7 (EU7) emissions regulations taking effect too, it’s also unclear if the ‘upgraded A-Class hatch’ mentioned will continue using its existing range of petrol and diesel mills.

Certainly, the Mercedes-AMG A35 hot-hatch and A45 super-hatch duo will be discontinued on the grounds that their respective turbocharged M260 and M139 4-cyl mills doesn’t comply with the new EU7 emissions regulations noted.

Autocar UK’s report further adds that production will also be shifted from its current Rastatt facility to the automaker’s other plant in Kecskemét, Hungary – the former is being repurposed to produce the new CLA and new CLA Shooting Brake.
