GWM has unveiled the updated version of the Tank 500 PHEV in China, set to go on sale later in August.

GWM’s off-road SUV sub-brand Tank has just unveiled the updated version of its flagship plug-in hybrid SUV, the GWM Tank 500 PHEV. For the 2025 model year (2025 MY) update, the new Tank 500 PHEV gets some minor design and equipment changes, as well as an assortment of new ADAS capabilities.

In terms of design, the new Tank 500 PHEV looks more or less the same as the pre-updated model, with the minor design changes being its redesigned front grille inserts, plus a new GWM logo that dons its tailgate. Also new here is the Dunhuang Green exterior colour, on top of the existing options like Kunlun Gold, Pamir Silver, and Mount Everest White.

With said minor design changes, the overall dimensions of the new Tank 500 PHEV remain unchanged from the previous model, spanning 5,078 mm long, 1,934 mm wide, 1,905 mm tall, and with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm.

On board, the updated Tank 500 PHEV retains the same cabin setup as other Tank 500 variants, with its front dash featuring a large 14.6-inch floating infotainment screen running Coffee OS 3, accompanied by a smaller 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Other creature comforts primed here include a built-in refrigerator under the central console, a separate 17.3-inch screen for rear passengers, heated and ventilated seats wrapped in Nappa leather upholstery, a wireless charger, and many more.

Powertrain-wise, the updated Tank 500 PHEV retains the same PHEV setup as before, available in two variants, namely the Hi4-T and Hi4-Z. The baseline Hi4T spec uses a 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged petrol engine rated at 248 hp, which is mated to a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission and a single electric motor to deliver 402 hp. Juice is provided by a sizable 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery pack for up to 110 km of pure electric range.

Meanwhile, the top-spec Hi4-Z variant is powered by the same turbocharged petrol engine, which is now mated to two electric motors and a 3-speed DHT gearbox to deliver a combined system output of 865 hp. The Hi4-Z variant also benefits from a larger 59.05 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, supplying the SUV up to 201 km of EV-only range.

Keen eyes will notice that the updated Tank 500 PHEV now sports a LiDAR unit on its roof, courtesy of GWM’s new third-gen Coffee Pilot Ultra ADAS suite, which also features several cameras on the front fenders and rear spoiler. However, GWM has yet to confirm whether this new ADAS suite will be offered as standard across all variants of the new Tank 500 PHEV.

The good news is that we don’t need to wait too long to find that out, as pre-sales for the new 2025 GWM Tank 500 PHEV will commence later in Aug 2025 in China. Predictably, no pricing details were shared by GWM for now, but we can expect it to be slightly heftier than the current model, which retails from CNY 335,000 (RM197,750) onwards.
