MG Planning 13 NEVs Globally, RM6.5b Investment Powers Expansion

“13 new EVs in two years.” That’s the headline-grabbing promise from MG, the ex-British brand now owned by China’s state giant SAIC.
The company’s General Manager Chen Cui revealed that MG will pour RMB10 billion (RM5.6 billion) into developing a wide mix of new energy vehicles, ranging from pure electrics to range extenders and plug-in hybrids. The aim is clear: reposition MG as a serious global contender in the NEV space, not just a nostalgic nameplate.

MG has been SAIC’s spearhead abroad, with 153,100 units sold in Europe in the first half of 2025 alone. Back home in China, however, sales remained modest at 57,254 units between Jan and July, this year dragged down by a limited line-up of new energy products.
Chen Cui admitted this gap has been a stumbling block, but said the brand is now ready to fix it.

Petrol models like the MG5 sedan continue to do well in China, particularly among young buyers and tuning fans. But MG’s new push will see 13 fresh NEVs rolled out globally within just two years.
Additionally the company echoed a recent statement from Geely where it is not chasing cut-price positioning, Chen Cui stressed, but will lean heavily on SAIC’s vast supply chain and technology partnerships. These include joint EV projects with Audi and Huawei, as well as connectivity tie-ups with Oppo and advances in semi-solid state batteries.

The first car off the block towards this goal is the all-new MG4 hatchback, which went on pre-sale in China this month ahead of its launch on Aug 29. Compact in size, the MG4 will even be offered with a semi-solid state battery before year-end. It kicks off a rapid-fire model rollout that MG hopes will cement its place among the new energy leaders.
For Malaysia, the announcement could be more than just distant headlines. MG already sells select models in the region, and with this aggressive global expansion, there is every chance that some of these NEVs will make their way onto our roads in the near future.
