The Ministry of Finance (MoF) says detailed plans for implementing targeted RON95 petrol subsidies will be announced by the end of Sept 2025. This timeline aligns with the statement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 23.

In a written reply to Parliament, the MoF said the government is still developing and testing the subsidy mechanism to ensure it can be rolled out smoothly.

This includes refining and cross-checking data from multiple agencies, such as the National Registration Department, Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM).

The goal is to create a more accurate and comprehensive approach to fuel subsidies, ensuring that RON95 benefits only go to eligible Malaysians.

The MoF said that once implemented, Malaysians who qualify will be able to buy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre using MyKad as verification at petrol stations.

Non-citizens and those who do not qualify will pay the unsubsidised market price, which is expected to be around RM2.50 per litre.

Even at that unsubsidised rate, RON95 in Malaysia remains far cheaper than in neighbouring countries such as Singapore, where prices can reach RM9.50 per litre.

The update was in response to a question in Parliament by Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan, who had asked for progress updates on the retargeting system, including both front-end and back-end phases announced earlier by the Ministry of Economy involving the Central Database Hub (PADU) database.
