BYD Brazenly Teases Upcoming New EV Kei Car For Japan
BYD is poised to be the first foreign automaker to build an EV Kei car tailored especially for Japanese market, and it will bow during this month's Japan Mobility Show 2025.

Chinese NEV-making giants BYD are set to become the first foreign automaker to build an all-electric (EV) ‘Kei car’ tailored exclusively for the Japanese market. The firm previously kept mum about this plan, but spyshots have already made waves online prior.
Now, BYD has dropped an official teaser confirming which, and the unnamed Kei car model debuts this month at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 (JMS 2025). This is indeed a big deal but allow us to explain in greater depth.

Typical examples of Kei cars include the (clockwise) Daihatsu Taft, Honda N-Box, Daihatsu Copen (Toyota Copen GR Sport), and the Honda S660.

What Is A Kei Car (K-Car)?
For the uninitiated, Japan’s Kei car class – loosely translated as “light vehicle” and called ‘K-car’ by fans – is the smallest category of expressway-legal passenger and commercial motor vehicles marketed solely for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM).
This vehicle class was first created in 1949 out of Japan’s post-war need for cheap, affordable mobility. It also has strict size and engine capacity restrictions meant to deal with Japan’s scarcity in parking spaces and keep both annual insurance and running costs low.
Whilst there were exceptions allowed prior like the European-built smart Fortwo and Polski Fiat 126p, none were ever tailored specifically for this class. Conversely, Japanese automakers that build Kei cars generally don’t export them overseas officially either.

Kei cars are restricted in both dimensions (maximum of 3,400 MM x 1,480 MM x 2,000 MM), engine capacity (660cc) and power (63 hp), with that last bit set through a "gentleman's agreement".

The latter stems from the fact that Kei cars are simply too specialised to be profitable overseas. However, a handful of which do get exported abroad by third parties and sold in markets where such cars are allowed for sale (like ours), usually to enthusiasts.
Presently, Kei cars are limited in length, width and height of 3,400 MM, 1,480 MM and 2,000 MM respectively. Mechanically, they are also strictly limited in capacity to just 660cc, and there’s a so-called “gentleman’s agreement” power cap of 64 PS (63 hp).
Examples of Kei cars commonly sold by local grey importers or ‘recond’ dealers include the Honda N-Box and Daihatsu Taft, not forgetting sportier choices like the Honda S660 and Daihatsu Copen (Toyota Copen GR Sport) roadsters.

So What’s BYD Doing?
Online reports suggests that this upcoming BYD Kei car could firstly command a starting price tag of around ¥2.5 million (RM69,286). This will see it undercut key EV Kei car rivals like the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi EK X models.
Secondly, early indications suggest this BYD EV Kei car will pack a 20 kWh battery – likely the marque’s signature ‘Blade’ LFP pack – and yield up to 180 KM in range. it is also expected to be able to accept DC fast-charging inputs of up to 100 kW.
From the early spyshots mentioned, expect this BYD EV Kei car to feature sliding rear doors boosting its practicality further, a ‘floating’ digital instrument panel, larger infotainment unit, as well as ‘double’ A-pillars providing increased visibility.
Following its official debut at JMS 2025 later this month, BYD is reportedly set to market its EV Kei car next year (2026) where it will rival against the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi EK X.

When Will It Debut And Launch?
As mentioned, this new EV Kei car from BYD will bow at the upcoming JMS 2025 expo that’s happening this month. Following which, market entry is widely speculated to take place sometime next year (2026) too.
Whie it is too early to tell if it will be successful, we will note that BYD already shifts a few thousand vehicles annually in Japan. The marque’s entry into the Kei car market certainly represents a significant step.
