BMW iX1

The BMW iX1 is a five-seat compact electric SUV currently offered in Malaysia solely as the standard-wheelbase eDrive20 M Sport, priced from RM250,800 on-the-road without insurance. It uses a single front-mounted electric motor producing 204 PS and offers up to 475 KM of WLTP range.

Standard warranty coverage is two years with unlimited mileage, while the high-voltage battery is covered for eight years or 160,000 KM. BMW Repair Inclusive can extend the vehicle warranty to five years with unlimited mileage.

The dashboard features the BMW Curved Display, combining a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.7-inch central touchscreen. BMW Operating System 9 provides a customisable interface controlled through touch or voice commands. 

The 10.25-inch digital instrument display presents speed, remaining range, navigation and driver-assistance information. A head-up display projects important driving information into the driver’s forward field of vision. 

Powered front sports seats are upholstered in Veganza synthetic leather or an Alcantara and Veganza combination. The rear backrests use a 40:20:40 split-folding arrangement, allowing longer items to be carried while retaining passenger seating. 

The standard-wheelbase iX1 provides comfortable accommodation for five occupants and a largely flat rear floor. Rear passenger room is suitable for adults, although it is less generous than in the separately listed long-wheelbase iX1 L.

The M leather multifunction steering wheel provides controls for media, calls, voice commands, driver information and assistance systems. Steering-column reach and height can be adjusted to suit the driver.

Cabin storage includes large door pockets, a glovebox, centre-console compartments and an open tray beneath the floating armrest. Additional luggage storage is available beneath the removable boot floor.

Two cup holders are positioned within the front centre console. Rear occupants receive additional drink storage through the folding centre armrest and door pockets.

USB-C charging connections are provided for front and rear occupants. A wireless charging tray at the front allows compatible smartphones to be charged without a cable. 

The powered tailgate opens to 490 litres of luggage capacity. Folding the rear seats expands the available space to 1,495 litres, giving the standard-wheelbase iX1 useful family practicality.

The standard-wheelbase iX1 measures 4,500 MM long, 1,845 MM wide and 1,616 MM tall, with a 2,692-MM wheelbase. Width increases to 2,104 MM with the exterior mirrors, while kerb weight is approximately 1,940 KG. 

The upright front features a closed kidney grille with an X-shaped internal pattern. The M Sport package adds more aggressive bumper sections and gloss-black trim for a sportier appearance than the regular BMW X1.

The squared-off rear combines a roof spoiler, sculpted M Sport bumper and powered tailgate. Its upright design provides better luggage practicality than the coupé-styled BMW iX2.

Adaptive LED headlamps provide cornering illumination and glare-free high-beam assistance. Their angular daytime-running-light graphics give the iX1 a recognisable front lighting signature. 

Full-LED tail lamps use three-dimensional L-shaped graphics that emphasise the vehicle’s width. Their angular appearance complements the squared wheel arches and upright rear body. 

The exterior mirrors are electrically adjustable and power-folding, with integrated turn indicators. Blind-spot warnings are provided through the Lane Change Warning system.

The Malaysian iX1 eDrive20 M Sport rides on 19-inch M Double-Spoke Style 871 M Bicolour alloy wheels. M high-gloss Shadowline trim and matching black roof rails complete the exterior package. 

Standard active-safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, ABS, traction control, Dynamic Stability Control, tyre-pressure monitoring and rear-collision prevention. 

Occupant protection includes front, front-side and curtain airbags, together with three-point seatbelts and ISOFIX child-seat mounting points on the outer rear seats.

BMW My Modes provides Personal, Sport and Efficient settings. These adjust accelerator response, steering assistance, displays, interior lighting and energy-management behaviour.

BMW Operating System 9 supports BMW Maps, Intelligent Personal Assistant, ConnectedDrive services, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Remote Software Upgrades allow selected vehicle functions to be updated over the air. 

A Harman Kardon sound system is fitted as standard. BMW IconicSounds Electric also generates artificial driving sounds that respond to acceleration and the selected driving mode. 

A front-mounted electrically excited synchronous motor produces 150 KW or 204 PS and 250 NM with temporary boost engaged. 

Power is delivered through a single-speed electric transmission. The motor provides smooth and immediate acceleration without conventional gear changes.

The iX1 eDrive20 uses front-wheel drive, with its single electric motor powering the front axle exclusively. It does not use the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system found in the discontinued xDrive30 variant. 

The iX1 eDrive20 accelerates from 0 to 100 KM/H in 8.6 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 170 KM/H.

Its lithium-ion battery has a gross capacity of approximately 66.5 kWh and around 64.8 kWh of usable energy. WLTP range is rated between 430 and 475 KM, with energy consumption of approximately 15.5 to 17.1 kWh per 100 KM.

Charging supports up to 11 KW AC, requiring around six hours and 30 minutes for a full charge. Maximum DC charging is 130 KW, allowing the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 29 minutes.

Convenience equipment includes Comfort Access, a powered tailgate, automatic lights and wipers, wireless smartphone charging and remote vehicle functions through the My BMW application.

Dual-zone automatic climate control is fitted with dedicated rear air-conditioning vents. Rear passengers also receive separate USB charging connections.

The quiet electric powertrain and insulated cabin provide a refined environment during urban driving. Tyre noise may become more noticeable on coarse highway surfaces, particularly with the standard M Sport wheels.

The standard-wheelbase BMW iX1 eDrive20 M Sport offers a practical 490-litre boot, premium interior, comprehensive parking technology and an efficient 475-KM maximum WLTP range. Its compact dimensions also make it easier to manoeuvre than larger premium electric SUVs.

However, its 204-PS front-wheel-drive powertrain is modest for the RM250,800 price, while 130-KW DC charging is slower than several newer competitors. Rear space is also less generous than in the similarly priced iX1 L.

Overall, the regular iX1 is the more compact and slightly longer-range choice, while buyers prioritising rear passenger space should consider the separate long-wheelbase model.
