Proton X70

The new X70 gets a polished and symmetrically-tiered dashboard, linked to a high-rising-bridge-style centre console (driver, passenger - grab handles). 

Soft-/hard-touch panelled, it sees a single-tone (Black) colour scheme with trimmings (Silver - centre dash, centre console, doors, steering wheel).

Accentuations, a contrast (Gloss Black - passenger side) trim panel (72-colour rhythmic light - Premium, Premium X), and a floating screen setup (infotainment).

Overall, the cockpit is neatly-designed, with accessibilities purposefully-arranged (driver-centric, user-friendly).

Installed is a 7.0-Inch LCD digital instrument cluster display, featuring different display themes (Drive Mode Select dependent).

Premium-made and highly-comfortable, the interior sees variant-specific treatments (colour schemes, upholsteries).

Single-tone (Black - Standard, Executive/Stone Grey - Premium, Premium X), and fabric/leatherette/Nappa leather (Standard/Executive/Premium, Premium X).

Variant Standard gets manual-operated (driver, passenger) front seats (bolstered), with a manual-operated (60:40 split-fold) rear bench (bolstered).

Variant Executive gets manual- (passenger) and electronic-operated (driver) front seats (bolstered, ventilated), with a manual-operated (60:40 split-fold) rear bench (bolstered).

Variants Premium and Premium X get electronic-operated (driver, passenger) front seats (bolstered, lumbar, ‘Boss’ switch, ventilated), with a manual-operated (60:40 split-fold) rear bench (bolstered).

Included are armrests (front - centre console - sliding, rear - centre seat - fold-out), a headliner (Black), and a panoramic glass sunroof (electric - tilt/slide - Premium X).

A full-fledged SUV, the five-seater’s cabin offers plenty of space, providing the front and rear occupants with ample interior mobility.

Also included is Steering Mode Select (Normal, Comfort, Sport), and drive is aided by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

Provided are four cup holders (two - front, rear) and four bottle holders (one - side doors).

Provided are five USB ports (three-front, two-rear) and one 12 V socket (front).

Accessing its manual- (Standard) and power-operated (Executive, Premium, Premium X) tailgate (remote/key fob, tailgate button, auto-open-sensor), opens up to 515-Litres of load capacity.

Weighing in at 1,585 KG (Standard), 1,595 KG (Executive), 1,605 KG (Premium) and 1,610 KG (Premium X), the new X70 stands at 4,526 MM long, 1,831 MM wide, 1,694 MM tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 2,670 MM.

A solid and sporty outlook, its mildly-sculpted exterior is derived from the Geely Boyue but with signature Proton elements.

The front-end sees a contoured bonnet, muscular quarter panels, Proton’s ‘Infinite Weave’ grille (Black-Chrome - Diamond pins, Silver - lower wing trim), and a sculpted bumper (vented - full-width lower, faux corners).

Accentuations are body cladding (Black - bumper, fenders, side sills, side mirror arms), body trimmings (Silver - bumper guard, fog light/window surrounds, lower doors, roof rails), and the Proton emblem (Chrome - centre grille).

A bold and commanding outlook, it boasts a horizontally- and symmetrically-designed silhouette with distinct Proton elements.

The rear-end sees a straight-cut roofline, a roof-edge spoiler, muscular quarter panels, a thickly-sculpted bumper (diffuser - faux-vented corners, two trapezoidal exhausts), and a trim bar (Black - middle-tailgate).

Accentuations are body cladding (Black - bumper, fenders, side sills, diffuser), body trimmings (Silver - window surrounds, lower doors, roof rails), and the Proton script (Chrome - centre tailgate).

Boxy and sharp, the headlamps are inward-tilted and angularly-housed. Installed are LED units, paired to a set of LED fog lamps.

Features are LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), automatic On/Off, follow-me-home lights, Intelligent High Beam Control (IHBC - Premium, Premium X), and turn signals.

Smooth and angularly-shaped, the tail lamps are housed in a wraparound design. Installed are LED combination units.

Features are turn signals, follow-me-home lights, and turn signals. Paired to the set is a high-mounted brake light (spoiler-integrated).

The two-tone (body-colour-Black) side mirrors are electronic-powered (auto-fold, adjust), with turn-signals and blind-spot indicators (Blind Spot Information System – BLIS - Premium, Premium X).

Variant Standard is fitted with a set of 17-Inch five-twin-spoke single-tone (Silver) alloy rims, wrapped in 225/65 R17 (front, rear) GT Radial Savero SUV tyres.

Variant Executive rides on a set of 18-Inch multi-spoke dual-tone (Silver-Black) alloy rims, wrapped in 225/60 R18 (front, rear) GT Radial Savero SUV tyres.

Variants Premium and Premium X sport a set of 19-Inch star-spoke dual-tone (Silver-Black) alloy rims, wrapped in 225/55 R19 (front, rear) Continental UltraContact UC6 SUV tyres.

The new X70 features the following suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). 

Standard systems (Standard, Executive, Premium, Flagship) are Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill Hold Assist (HHA), and Hill Descent Control (HDC).

Variant-specific systems (Premium, Premium X) are Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop/Go, Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Lane Centring Control (LCC), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Door Opening Warning (DOW), Traffic Sign Information (TSI), and Intelligent High Beam Control (IHBC).

Others are parking cameras with 3D display (reverse/360-degree - Standard/ Executive, Premium, Premium X) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS - Premium, Premium X).

Passive safety includes six airbags (driver-passenger, front side, front-rear curtain), seatbelts (anchors, reminders, pre-tensioners), ISOFIX (two - outer rear seats - anchors, top tethers), front parking sensors (two - Executive/four - Premium, Premium X), rear parking sensors (four - Standard, Executive, Premium, Premium X), Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold, and security alarm (anti-theft, immobiliser).

Three selectable drive modes (Normal, Eco, Sport). 

Also incorporated is the Steering Mode Select (Normal, Comfort, Sport).

Installed is a 12.3-Inch frameless-floating centre touchscreen, running on the ATLAS Operating System 2.0 (ACO Tech OS 2.0 - dual-quad-core processor, 4 GB RAM/32 GB storage). 

The system supports voice command (Hi Proton), online navigation/music/weather, Spotify, smartphone/Bluetooth/4G/Wi-Fi connectivity, the Proton Link App (phone app control - vehicle status, functions), and Over-The-Air (OTA) system updates.

Android Auto/Apple CarPlay compatible.

Entertainment is channelled via a setup of six speakers.

Harbouring in the X70 is a petrol powertrain.

Underpinned is a direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine (TGDi - 1.5-Litre in-line, three-cylinder, 12-valve DOHC with VVT - 175 HP (130 KW) at 5,500 RPM, 255 NM at 1,500 to 4,000 RPM).

Fitted is a seven-speed automatic Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) with manual mode.  

Power is transmitted to the front wheels, via a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) system.

Fuel tank is of 60-Litre capacity, and combined fuel consumption reads at 7.3 L/100 KM.

The new X70 comes with these conveniences.

Installed suspension setups are Macpherson strut (front) and multilink with stabiliser (rear). 

Drivability and comfort levels are satisfactory. Specifically tuned for the rough and tough Malaysian roads.

Overall, the ride quality is firm, and the interior is very spacious and extremely comfortable. 

Good sound insulation, covering all the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects (multiple areas improved).

The cabin is refined and peaceful, alienated from most of the road noises.
