TNB Electrified 30% Of Its Fleet, But 6 TNB Electron Stations Yet To Be Deployed!

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) recently announced that it is accelerating its transition to a sustainable future by committing to a 30% electrified operational fleet by 2030. No doubt, this aligns with Malaysia's 2050 carbon neutrality target.

As part of this commitment, TNB has fleeted 98 new EVs, including 78 electric pickup trucks and 20 electric vans. This now sees its total EVs fleeted up to 127 vehicles.

Dato' Seri Ir. Baharin Din, TNB's President and CEO, emphasised, “This effort underscores TNB’s dedication to a rapid and responsible energy transition. We aim to replace 30% of our vehicles with EVs by 2030, totaling more than 1,000 units, in line with the Malaysian Government’s target of 20% EVs in Total Industry Volume sales by 2030."

TNB anticipates a yearly reduction of 2,200 to 4,833 tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2030, equivalent to planting approximately 88,000 to 193,320 trees. They aim to do so by strategically integrating the conversion of its fleet to EVs into its end-of-useful-life replacement process, in line with achieving Net Zero 2050.

TNB also anticipates significant economic benefits from its EV adoption initiative. The energy giant estimates cost savings ranging from 35% to 86% on repair and maintenance, 25% to 70% lower energy costs, and an annual offset of approximately 6% to 12% in fossil fuel expenditure.

Furthermore, Baharin also stated, "TNB is dedicated not only to accelerating EV adoption by 2030 but also to reskilling for the EV industry through TNB ILSAS, building charging infrastructure, sponsoring EV-related studies, and fostering coalitions among EV sector players."

To support Malaysia's growing EV ecosystem, TNB intends to expand its EV charging infrastructure with over 500 charging points across the country by 2025, in accordance with the National Energy Transition Roadmap.

We previously reported in March 2023 that TNB, which currently has three (3) DC Fast Charging (DCFC) stations at Ayer Keroh (heading north - 2x90kw), Tapah (heading north - 2x90kw) on the North-South Motorway, and Paka (heading north - 2x90kw) on East Coast Motorway 2 (LPT2), would add six (6) more DCFC stations.

The six proposed DCFC stations at R&R Machap (heading south), R&R Rawang (heading north), R&R Gunung Semanggol (heading south), R&R Gurun (both heading north and south), and R&R Paka.

A TNB representative we spoke to at the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) stated that the DCFC deployment was delayed last year due to land acquisition matters, but has been resolved and the above mentioned DCFC would be deployed and operational by March 2024.

However, despite the fact that March is only a few days away, we have yet to hear of any of these DCFC station projects becoming a reality.
