2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Launches in Malaysia – 402 HP, 438 KM Range, From RM288K

Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) sees its electrified line-up grow today, as the all-new 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge officially debuts for the first time in the country. This pure electric crossover coupe SUV is poised to join VCM’s all-electric line up where it will play a part in the firm’s plans of transitioning towards having 75% of its total sales being solely from EVs by 2025.

Globally available in two variants – Recharge and Recharge Twin – the Malaysian market gets the latter version that shares most of its performance components including its underpinning with the local spec XC40 Recharge EV. To note, both cars share the CMA platform architecture – a brainchild of Volvo and Geely’s partnership – derived from the ICE-powered XC40.

The up-specced C40 Recharge Twin boasts a dual electric motor setup with both motors bolted on either axle, rated at 402 HP and 660 NM. This setup grants the C40 Recharge Twin an all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration that propels this crossover from naught to 100 KM/H in only 4.7 seconds. Flat out, the C40 Recharge Twin will reach an electronically limited V-Max of 180 KM/H.

Juicing its motors is a 78-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivers an estimated travel range of 438 KM. Supporting both AC and DC charging, the C40 Recharge takes about 8 hours and 15 minutes to fully recharge via 11 kW AC charging (Type 2 plug). Meanwhile, a 150 kW DC fast charger will juice up the C40 Recharge from 10% to 80% in only 28 minutes.

In terms of styling, the C40 Recharge gets a sportier stance over its XC40 twin thanks to the sporty roofline and its steeply raked rear windscreen, a la ‘coupe’ or ‘sportback’, if you will.

The bottom half of the C40 Recharge is pretty much similar to said XC40 twin, which comes with a more ‘traditional’ SUV roofline.

Thanks to said sporty roofline, the C40 Recharge features a dual rear spoiler setup – one on the roof, one on its juxtaposed tail. Sitting below the two spoilers are the L-shaped LED taillights that go from the C-pillar down towards the rear end. Other conventional SUV design cues such as the blackened wheel arches and skirts as well as two-tone roofline finish are also available in this crossover coupe.

Up front, the C40 Recharge dons the iconic Thor hammer LED headlights, flanked on either side of its deleted front grille, while Volvo’s signature Iron Mark emblem sits in the middle. Also, this coupe SUV rides on a set of 19-inch wheels with minimal openings for better aerodynamic performance.

Customers can pick up to five flavours of tint for the C40 Recharge, namely Fjord Blue, Black Stone, Silver Dawn, Crystal White and Sage Green.

Inside the C40 Recharge lies a sleek, minimalistic yet gorgeous cabin design that mimics the XC40 Recharge’s interior. The Android-powered 9-inch infotainment display crowns its front dash, while the driver gets a 12-inch instrument cluster display. With an emphasis on sustainability, the C40 Recharge’s seats upholstery, steering wheel and gear knob are made of leather-free material.

Additional features such as the 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, wireless charging pad, backlit trim décor and panoramic sunroof top-off the C40 Recharge’s long-list of luxury amenities.

As Volvo is well-known for its utmost safety, the C40 Recharge comes with an array of safety features, including Volvo’s proprietary City Safety suite that comprises collision avoidance and mitigation function, capable of detecting pedestrians, cyclists, and even large animals.

Standard advanced driver’s assistance system (ADAS) features included are Automated Emergency Braking (AEB), Front and Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation, Lane Keep Assist (LKAS), Run-off Road Mitigation with Road Edge Detection, Cross-Traffic Alert (CTA), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Steer Assist and many more.

Locally assembled (CKD) in Volvo’s Shah Alam plant, the 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge starts at RM288,888 OTR sans insurance. For that price, customers will get a five-year car warranty plus service and Volvo On Call road assistance, as well as an eight-year battery pack warranty. Also included is an exclusive four-year digital service subscription.

For comparison, its closest local rival, the Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 AMG Line commands a higher price tag of RM296,888, albeit boasting inferior performance specs. Meanwhile, its more conventional twin, the XC40 Recharge EV is priced at RM278,888.

Keen to get your hands on this latest EV SUV crossover? Online sales for the C40 Recharge are poised to commence via Volvo Malaysia’s official sales platform, starting at 8PM, Dec 14, 2022.

Folks, what are your thoughts on the all-new Volvo C40 Recharge? Would you prefer this Malaysian-made Swedish EV SUV over its slightly more expensive German-imported adversary? As always, don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments down below…
