- Toyota GR86, GR Corolla & GR Supra Star In Their Own Anime Series
Yes, the GR Supra, GR Corolla, and GR86 trio of sportscars are starring in their own Anime series titled "Grip: A Toyota Story" that drops later today!
Set to drop later today (26 Feb), "Grip: A Toyota Story" presents itself as a futuristic Anime mini-series produced by Toyota. The stars of this animated feature are none other than the Japanese automaker’s sportscars trio comprised of the GR86, GR Corolla, and GR Supra.
Of course, this isn’t the first Anime or Manga to feature Toyota sportscars. Aptly, a title like Initial D, which helped catapult the AE86 Trueno to cult status, comes to mind. A more recent example however comes in the form of said Anime series' successor MF Ghost, which heavily featured the Toyota GT86 – the AE86 Trueno’s modern day spiritual successor - and more.
Back to this latest effort and, clearly, Toyota seeks to replicate a similar strategy for all three cars – not just the new GR86 – with its own entry into the Anime and Manga realm. Five episodes of "Grip: A Toyota Story" have been planned, and all will be available through the official Toyota USA website first, though it’s unclear just yet if these will also be available elsewhere later on.
The plot of this mini-series is something many avid car enthusiasts can get behind with. It centres on protagonist Jae Kang as he battles the “evils of soulless automated driving”, the latter embodied by a fictional tech conglomerate that controls a fleet of self-driving vehicles bent on some kind of world domination type deal.
Of course, the last thing standing between said evil conglomo’s will are Jae Kang and friends, along with arguably the real stars of the show – the GR sportscars trio.
The GR86 is poised to make its appearance complete in a race-ready cup livery and piloted by a master-and-apprentice duo of Kumal Jo and Master Rugu. At the wheel of the GR Corolla is protagonist Jae Kang himself, and he’s accompanied by a pink-haired friend named Linh “Nitro” Lam who pilots the GR Supra.
Apart from which, Toyota hasn’t let out much else revolving the series’ plot, so we’ll have to wait a little and watch each of the five episodes as they release later today. We wouldn’t be surprised to see some of Toyota’s other past sportscars other than the AE86 Trueno make cameo appearances here.

ICYMI, we test-drove both the GR86 and GR Corolla back-to-back recently. Check out our in-depth reviews of both by clicking here and here.
Closer to reality, we had our own experiences with two of the three protagonist GR cars featured in this Anime. Predictably, the end-results of which were thrilling so to speak.
