Malaysian E-Racer Triumphs In Toyota GR GT Cup Asia 2024 Finals
The Toyota GR GT Cup Asia 2024 regional finals got underway in Kuala Lumpur last weekend, and it saw the region’s best e-sports racers battle it out virtually to be crowned as regional champions and earn their spots in the Toyota GR GT Global Finals 2024.
This year’s running saw a total of 15 competitors, comprised of top three national level winners from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore, taking part. As per past editions, these winners competed as teams across three stages, all vying for both glory.
The competition, held on Gran Turismo 7 for the Sony PlayStation 4 and 5 (PS4/PS5) consoles, saw a blend of strategic prowess, precision driving, and bold moves. Fans were treated with an unforgettable showdown on iconic tracks like Sardegna Windmills, Nürburgring GP course, and Fuji International Speedway.
The championship was determined from cumulative points earned through finishing positions across all three races, the first five positions in qualifying rounds, and bonus points for the fastest laps in each of the three races.
The top three individuals and teams each received a cash prize of US$8,000, US$4,500 and, US$3,000, respectively. From here, the top three winners will represent Asia at the GR GT Global Finals 2024.
By day’s end, it was reigning Malaysian national champion Taj Izrin Aiman who reigned supreme and took the title of Individual Champion through his haul of 65 points after three races. Coming in second was Indonesia’s Andika Rama whilst his compatriot Moreno Pratama secured third.
“I’m truly at a loss for words. Although I faced technical difficulties and couldn't finish the race last year, I'm overwhelmed with pride that my dedication and training have paid off, leading to a victory at the GR GT Cup Asia 2024,” said an emotional Aiman after clinching his first regional-level win.
Following which, Taj will now team up with both Andika and Moreno and compete against the world’s best at the competition’s global finals which takes place on Dec 6 in Amsterdam.
