- A Single Public Transport Trip Eliminates 300 Cars From Traffic - Loke
A single public transport journey can alleviate traffic congestion in densely populated areas, notably the Klang Valley, by removing 300 vehicles from the road, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
He also pointed out that daily public transport ridership has exceeded one million passengers in Malaysia, Utusan Malaysia has reported.
"This means that if that person uses public transport twice every day, he will reduce the number of vehicles on the road by 500,000. Consider how bad the traffic would be if we didn't have public transport
"Today, even though we have a public transport system that can be said to be comprehensive in the Klang Valley, the problem of road congestion is still very bad," he says, adding that the government advocates for mandatory daily public transport use to reduce private car usage, identifying it as the primary obstacle to overcome.
Despite reaching a milestone of one million daily riders, public transport usage in Malaysia remains at 20%. This figure is significantly below the 40% target set by the National Transport Policy 2019-2030, according to Loke.
“The national transport policy from 2019 to 2030 is already in place. So, our challenge is how to ensure that this policy is realised according to its intended goals,” the minister says.
