New MINI EV Charging Bays Opened In Gurney Plaza, Penang

Leading authorised BMW, BMW Motorrad and MINI dealers Auto Bavaria has opened  new MINI-branded electric vehicle (EV) charging bays located in Gurney Plaza, Penang. These stand as the first MINI-branded charging facility to open up in the Northern Corridor of the peninsular, in fact.

Primed in the new Mini-branded charging bay at Gurney Plaza, Penang ate three 'MINI Gen 3' wallboxes rated at 22 kW each.

Located at Level 6 of the Gurney Plaza shopping haven’s parking levels, the space features three dedicated ‘MINI Gen 3’ wallboxes, each rated at 22 kW and capable of charging both full-EVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

According to Auto Bavaria, access to these new chargers is a hassle-free process, as it only requires users to simply plug-in their EVs or PHEVs to start charging them. In fact, these wallboxes are freely accessible to the public during Gurney Plaza’s mall operation hours, which are from 10AM to 10PM daily.

“Gurney Plaza is the ideal location for our charging facility as it is a popular mall strategically located in the heart of Penang, making the location convenient for EV owners to charge their vehicles while they are out and about shopping at the mall.” said  Vi Thim Juan, MD of Sime Darby Auto Bavaria.

Vi adds that the new charging bays were installed to better serve customers and owners who have purchased the MINI Electric from Auto Bavaria Penang. Said model accounts for over 30% of Auto Bavaria Penang’s deliveries for the Mini brand throughout 2022.

Auto Bavaria Penang saw the MINI Electric (2023 model pictured) chart more than 30% of its Mini-branded vehicle deliveries in 2022.

The new facilities for charging MINI vehicles at Gurney Plaza aims to support this growing demand for electric vehicles as well as offer more access to public charging in the northern states,” continued Vi further in his press statement regarding the opening of these new charging bays.

Adding to this was Peter Chan, General Manager, Mall Management, CapitaLand Investment, who noted that the latest addition of these Mini-branded chargers adds to the total number of EV chargers now operational in Gurney Plaza. “There are currently 4 EV charging stations in total including 3 from MINI,” he clarified.
