Nissan GT-R R35 Production Winds Down After 17-year Spell
After 17 years, production of the R35 GT-R is reportedly set to cease by Oct this year.
Earlier this year, Japanese automaker Nissan officially revealed two new final-run special editions of its current-generation R35 GT-R halo sportscar specifically for the North American market.
This also marks the final chapter of the storied performance car nameplate as its production will cease by Oct this year based on recent reports online. Known amongst fans as "Godzilla," the R35-generation model first debuted in what seemed like a lifetime ago back in 2007.
Like its Skyline-based predecessors, it quickly became a cornerstone of high-performance sportscars. The Nissan GT-R has enjoyed a 17-year production run, with Nissan continuously updating it year-on-year, along with several ‘major’ updates, to make it better.
Central to the GT-R's prowess was its twin-turbo V6 heart, trick AWD setup, and a well-sorted chassis.
What remains though is its base formula of pairing a powerful twin-turbocharged 6-cyl mill with a trick all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup and an equally sorted chassis. Outputting no less than 562 HP and 633 NM, the GT-R was able to perform 0-100 KM/H sprints in just about 3 secs as well.
The two special editions noted earlier made for US market-bound 2024 model year batches were the T-spec Takumi Edition and the Skyline Edition. These were designed to honour the craftsmanship and performance that the GT-R has represented.
The T-spec Takumi Edition boasts exclusive features and meticulous attention to detail, while the Skyline Edition pays homage to the GT-R's rich heritage. Read our initial report of both models for a better insight by clicking these blue words.
Announced earlier this year for the US market specifically were the T-Spec Takumi Edition and Skyline Edition specials.
The decision to end GT-R production aligns with Nissan's strategic shift towards future innovations, namely its ‘The Arc’ business plan. Said transition reflects the broader trends in the industry, where sustainability and cutting-edge technology are becoming paramount.
The GT-R's departure marks the end of an era, but its legacy will continue to inspire. For fans and collectors, the GT-R will remain a symbol of Nissan's engineering prowess and a testament to the brand's commitment to performance.
As we bid farewell to "Godzilla," we celebrate the remarkable journey of a car that has left an indelible mark on the automotive world. Moreover, a brand new and all-electric successor has been promised, and it’s poised to set new standards as far as all-electric sportscars go. KR
